Which option is better?

I feel overwhelmed/stressed and I just want to get this over with. I have a bare/ugly corner in full sun ,zone 6 (ohio). I am a beginner gardener and want something that looks nice (perennials) and is low maintenance.

Here are my options:

A. Do nothing until next year in spring and it will just look unkempt/ugly until then. We get snow in November.

B. Use either of these plan:

Anything I can't find in the plan, either replace with something else or wait til next year to get whats missing.

C. Pick and choose plants I like (full sun, zone 6) and hope it will look good together. (My only concern with this is that I'll end up picking out things that aren't low maintenance or don't go together well.) I can try to look things up as I go but no guarantees I know enough info to keep me out of trouble!)

Being that is July (can still plant perennials right?) and selections might be limited, which option seems better? I desire low maintenance and I don't want to have to redo my corner for a long time. Thanks for your help.

Neither really looks all that maintenance free to me. If plants are not deadheaded before the seeds dry and drop, you may end up with a kazillion coneflowers or something. No perennials are truly maintenance free. There is always a certain amount of time that needs spent if things are going to be kept looking good.

How big is the sunny area? If I wanted something fairly maintenance free, I would plant one of the bigger Hydrangea Paniculatas that will thrive in full sun...like the Limelight Hydrangea Depending upon space, I would include a peony or 2 or 3. Again, depennding upon room, I would include a couple of fans of irises. I would also plant some clumps of daffodils for early springtime color...and mulch it all very well.

The daff foliage will die back off on its own and should be left in place until it is well yellowed.
The peonies should be deadheaded after the blooms fade. The foliage can then be left in place until Aug or later for fall cleanup.
The iris will need deadheaded after the blooms fade, and the ratty outer foliage pulled off as the season progresses.

These are just a few of my favorite things and I consider them pretty carefree. oh...one should not mulch over the top of the bearded iris rhizomes though. Preen will help to keep any weed seeds from germinating.

Use a garden store's landscape design kit..not sure where you live but I used Natorp's and it was only $50 and now my ugly corner is beautiful plus I got a $25 gift card to biy plants with the purchase. It's a big investment to plant things not knowing if it will work in your yard. I'll attach their website but if you are not in the Cincinnati area most garden stores offer this service I think.

Could you clarify on which side of the front door you envision each of these options? One preliminary thought arises regarding the use of trees for shade, which is that their roots complicate any brickwork in their vicinity. Another is that pebbles, especially under trees, will be a maintenance nightmare. Depending on whether I understand your proposals correctly, so far I like the pergola/arbour idea best, but I envision it on the left of the house, where it looks less busy, or centred, and I would recraft it as sort of an entry courtyard/meet-and-greet area, maybe done in flagstone or pavers. But I can only access two photos of your house in your album, and neither one seems to show the margins, especially the right, nor a good distance view. So really, I'm kind of flailing about for context.

Roller shades - spring roller or pull chain

Boy, am I ever glad to hear someone's getting roller shades. I still have horizontal blinds in our bedroom and I hate those things. They are so grubby, but I don't want to waste my time cleaning something I hate so much. That's why I've been thinking of going with a roller shade, but I haven't heard many people talk about them and wondered if they were considered too old fashioned. We used to have a roller shade in DD's bedroom. She liked total darkness when sleeping and it was the only thing that would keep the room dark enough. It was one of the tension pull ones and the drapery company that we got everything from attached a very pretty metal pull on it. It looked very nice. I really can't say we had a problem with it losing it's tension either. I'm not familiar with the continuous loop chain, but it really sounds like it would be a lot easier to control the height of the blind. Whatever you decide, please post pics. I'd love to see how they look in your lovely room.

I actually really like this plan! What are you going to use for finishes? Any "special items" planned for your kitchen? Rhome is a great one for adding coffee bars and baking centers, etc. Your range location also opens up the possibility of making that space a real focal point, from the dining room. On the fridge wall, have you thought about a pantry or broom closet on one side of the fridge, with a "landing space" on the other? Maybe a counter with glass doors above, for wine glasses, tea cups, or other special display items, on the dining room side of the fridge? The reason I ask, is that you don't have a space near the fridge to set down juices and other items, without walking over to the sink or stove area. For storage, do you have a larger pantry or laundry area downstairs? Some people like to have everything in the kitchen, but you're working with limited space. If you have an area for additional storage (large items not used very often) that will free up more space for everyday items in the kitchen...and give you room for "special" features, like a display cabinet or a fancy hood over the range :) Where does the single door in the dining room go? Do you have a porch or another room on that side? Just curious... Oh, one other question. Is the hall bath going to be used for the kids' rooms? If so, you might want to replace the walk-in shower with a tub/shower combo. Also, if you don't mind, what are the dimensions on your master bedroom and bath? I am probably overstepping here, but it looks like you have a lot of space at the foot of the bed, and the toilet is kind of centered between the tub and shower. Has your designer provided any drawings of the rooms with a picture of each wall. For instance...how will it look, when you're standing in front of the double sinks? What is your view from the tub? You have some nice space there and I think you could set up something that emphasizes the sinks and tub (your pretty areas) and still leaves plenty of room for the toilet and large shower. Maybe some way that the toilet is not between the tub and the shower. (I've seen that before in a bathroom and it wasn't a great look). Again, sorry if I've moved way beyond the point of your original question :)

You also need to consider the counter support that is needed in the design of the cabinets. The requirements for support are any granite over 10”, and any quartz over 13” can not be cantilevered. There is also the 2/3 -1/3 rule for cantilevers. 2/3 of the cabinets must be covered with stone, in order for it to extend 1/3. If the extension is beyond 1/3, you need physical support. If you want that cute table look with legs for your overhang, all of those pieces have to fit with the back of the island design. The storage on the back can’t interfere with the support realities. The supports have to come first. The invisible steel brackets still need attachment points, and can only be used to extend out so far, because of the 2/3-1/3 rule.

how long have you been at your house? is this a brand new home? how big is the area you are working with?

i'd spend my time for he end of the summer and fall getting the site ready. with luck you might be able to get in 2 cover crops to turn into green manure and a 3rd one as a winter cover crop. this will really help get rid of weeds and add nutrients to the soil. then over the winter plan your space and make your plant selections so that when spring gets here you can start planting early in the season. then next fall you can plant more as well as spring flowering bulbs. to cheer you up if this is a new house put a couple of asters by your front door for this fall and plant some crocus and daffs in the same area for next spring. by the time your daffs have finished blooming you should be able to start working on you new garden.

also the advice above about design services is good. as well as observing this summer what plants you like and when they bloom so you can have a list for a designer of what you like and don't like.
