Hollywood Hosta Name Needed

Hey, everybody! I have not been online because I've been fostering dogs. Right now, I'm giving hospice care to a dog whose middle name is Hollywood. Go see him, he's an absolute love.

When he leaves, I will want to plant a hosta in his honor. Doesn't someone here have a list of hosta varieties with Hollywood-show business names? Like 'On Stage'?

Or names with "Jack" in them would be good too; that's his first name. Thanks!

The first one that came to mind was Hollywood Lights, the other is Jack of Diamonds. Both I have seen available online, but cannot remember where.

Jack looks like a sweetheart. Such an all-around good breed too. He is lucky to have you!

"Jacobson (above) lists J. chinensis 'Variegated Kaizuka' as a synonym, under J. chinensis var. torulosa 'Variegata'" According to Welch, it was raised in 1965 at Monrovia Nursery from a sport and named by Den Ouden & Boom; if this is correct (not guaranteed!), it is post-1959 so can't have a Latin cv name. As to whether it is two languages or not - I think one could reasonably argue that 'Kaizuka' is (through its use as a cultivar name for a related cultivar) a legitimate loan word in English from Japanese. 'Kaizuka' itself was (again according to Welch) formally named by a German person (Hornibrook), not a Japanese person. But I'd also interpret the ICNCP stipulation "a language other than Latin" to be a generalised statement merely excluding Latin, not restricting names to one language per name. I'd bet there's plenty of other cultivar names made up from more than one language. "I've also read numerous sources describing names like "chisio improved" for japanese maples illegit for this reason" That's illegit because of the use of the word "improved", not because it contains two languages: "(f) Do not use any of the following banned words (or their equivalents in any language) in your epithet: "cultivar", "grex", "group", "hybrid", "maintenance", "mixture", "selection", "series", "sport", "strain", "variety" (or the plural form of these words in any language) or the words "improved" or "transformed". (ICNCP Art. 19.19-19.20)" Resin

I like Sea Dragon also. Since the pollen parent of your new plant is Sea Prize, it makes good sense to have Mrs. Seaver's original name included in your new name. In this case, I would call her up to request permission to use the word "Sea" in the name. Maybe you could even list Mrs. Seaver on the registration form as the "nominant". Her phone number is available in the current AHS Membership Directory.

Pam, Smorz, those are terrific! Thanks! I can track them down.

Smorz, I'm lucky to have him. I love German Shorthairs and though I'm trying not to, I love Jack. He's an absolute angel who lost the only daddy he's ever known in a very difficult family crisis. (The poor man had no choice at all.) We're trying to make it up to him in the time he has left; probably about three months.

So I looked your suggestions up at the Hosta Library:

Hollywood Lights shiny?

Jack of Diamonds Oooh!

Jackpot (a yellow/chartreuse)

I also took a look at 'Jack Blue' (a rumpled gray-blue) and 'Jack in the Beanstalk,' a Krossa-type. I already have two nice Krossa Regals, though. Hmm, but having a green one to put with the two blue ones... hmmm!

That wasn't nice smorz...you made me go to their website, which I had never heard of, & I had to get Foxfire Bamm Bamm & Foxfire Divine Winds...you guys are no help to us hosta addicts!!! When my wife finds out that I have 10 more hosta on the way, she's gonna flip! (sigh) ;-)

I got Bamm Bamm last year and it reverted immediately to a solid green. :(

I was supposed to go to Foxfire tomorrow but my lil guy isn't feeling well. I most likely wont go for a few weeks now. Buying Bamm Bamm and Irish Moon are the main reason for the visit. Divine WInds makes my heart flutter but is out of budget this year. I will take pictures to share with everyone when I get back.
I have heard others say Bamm Bamm has gone green, but I cannot resist.

Why don't you get an unnamed seedling and name it Jack Hollywood? Then you would be reminded of Jack everytime you see the plant. There are plenty of hostas out there named for dogs, and I think it's a nice memorial to a furry four foot who's been important in your life. If you don't have any seedlings of your own, I would be happy to send you one of mine.

I do rescue work as well, mostly with long coated Chihuahuas and Pomeranians. I currently have a seedling named after my beloved Brio, a lc Chihuahua rescue who passed away last fall at the age of 19 1/2. His constant companion Brigitta is still going strong at 20, and she loves to go out in the garden and romp along the paths in the garden.

Oh, a seedling! Yikes... I've had rotten luck with seedlings and small sports. However, I have a lot of seed this year so maybe I ought try again. Thank you for the idea.

Chihuahuas... their longevity is a real reason to admire the breed, unlike Great Danes, where you get your heart broken every seven years. My breed, the German shorthaired pointers, generally make it to 12 and not to 14, though I knew one gentleman, Printz, who stayed until he was sixteen.

Brio is a great name.
