What new dainties have you BOUGHT this year?

After all the swapping and growing from seed, I broke down and made my annual pilgrimmage to Baker's Acres. I got a beautiful new Sea Holly, Dianthus Sarah, Gomphrena Strawberry Fields (my winter sown ones croaked), another nice Baptisia Australis and of course, Coleus fireworks.

Can't leave that place without a new and crazy coleus.

I was disappointed, but not suprised that Ech. Orange Beadowbrite and Fragrant Angel were gone. I was also disappointed that they were selling purple loosestrife, although it was Morden's Pink.

If I can ever find the place to put it, I'm wicked-excited about my new Autumn lilac --Heptacodium miconiodes -- that I bought on the internet.

From the same place I bought a few Nodding Ladies Tresses -- native orchids. They're in the ground and seem happy in the one spot of shade I have -- can't wait to see them blom!

My neighbor teases me that I seem to be constitutionally incapable of going anywhere near a graden center without getting at least one plant, but these two, and my new fig, are the ones I'm the most excited about.

Mike, First I want to say, the plants I received, beginning Jan 1, 2010, were in 3-4" containers, bulbs and cuttings. Only a handful were larger, meaning 8" to 1' tall. Total: 58. :) :( Marguest, your Banana Tree is beautiful. The colors amazing. There's even a pup. Did you find it on Ebay? Mike, to answer a few questions. I MUST stay away from Ebay..It's one addicting site. Not only do they have great deals on plants, but plant supplies. There's also a few online nurseries I browse every other wk or so. The internet makes it too easy to shop for such an exciting hobby. A few clicked keys, next thing, a package is at your front door? One word of Warning for those who really want to stop buying plants.. Well, an attempt. Do NOT sign up for nursery News Letters. It's convenient, swaying us to their site, displaying their wares. Hear the clicking keys to Paypal? lol. As for local nurseries, fortunately, there are two that sell very very nice and rare specimens..luckily, opposite directions, both a long distance drive. An hour on non-congested days, 1.5-2 hours during 9-5, Rush Hour traffic. Although, traffic has gotten so heavy the past five years, the only time to go anywhere with time to spare is between midnight and 5am. Problem is, the stores are closed. lol. Our grocery store, Jewel's, always has plants for sale. Mostly, basic plants like Spaths, certain Dracaenas, etc. My problem arises when they have dollar sales. 3-4" potted plants for 1.00. Every so often, they'll have a rarer specimen. Buy 3, pot them up, and you have a lovely plant for 3.00. Four years ago, they had, mixed in with other dollar plants, Schefflera 'brassaia/actinophylla, a plant I hadn't seen in years...last one) I grabbed it up fast. lol. That's about it. Jane..Oh boy, I am almost afraid to look!! Thank you. Chris: You have got to be kidding me right? That is one of my favorite nurseries for many plants I can't get from others! I was just there last week and they were about to have a HUGE sale on all their out of flower orchids..I think it is happening now..They had quite a few set up on one table..You better hit that place as soon as today..lol $2 ? That is a much better deal than mine..You are so lucky to live close to that place..You should see their "corpse plant" there.. Nick..They must still look awsome..I tell you..The ones in my yard at my house in the Tropics grow the nicest and biggest, some fragrant flower you could ever see while the leaves look like garbage..lol. I have been really good this season. I just moved from NC this past winter and I'm still trying to adjust. I have only bought things which had been on my 'must have' list, no annuals... yet. I was at Keller's Flea Market in Savannah and found a Brugmansia, my first, and a variagated abutilon pictum 'Thomsonii'. The abutilon was never on my list, since I had never seen it, but I was struck by the variagation. It looks like the digital camoflage the military is using! I was given an agapanthus... I've been after one forever. I bought a euonymus fortunei 'Wolong Ghost' because I'd wanted it forever too. I found it half off at Lowes along with a pink clematis, which I can't remember the name of right now. ---Keith

Let's see, now its getting numerous. Are we still listing? In addition, kerria, brunneria, pulmonaria, bergeria, epimediam, viburnum carlesi, hellebore hybrid, spirea Ogon, bleeding hearts, the daphnes are budding, violas, veronica Georgia Blue, Foam flowers are in bud, dogwoods, a cyclamen I overwintered but is in the garden - does that count?(the smaller flowered florist cyclamen plants do great in the garden and just need to come in before freezing), violets, pussytoes, ajuga is budding, creeping charly and dandelions. Plus another weed I foolishly brought hope last year. and then I bought a few things....I won't count those. BTW, if you can find the viola Tiger Eyes, its fragrant. So is Etain - both which I bought.

Alison...I totally understand about the garden center stuff and making room. I have to admitt that 2 (yes 2!!) butterfly bushes didn't make it over the winter. I will replace one with a seedling of a butterfly bush I've been watching - it's now a big plant, actually. And the other..well -it's lots of room for NEW and DIFFERENT plants. I wasn't sad for long.

As for the garden centers...it's how I give directions around town. They are my landmarks.

that reminds me that one of my friends says im the only one she knows that gives directions by garden plantings lol
turn left by the huge hillside planted full of junipers and then 3 blocks down turn right by the canadian hemlock. follow till you get to the stone wall with knockout roses in front of it and then 3 driveways down stop at the petunia bed

I really don't buy very many plants, getting most of them from friends and swaps. But I love finding things on sale at the end of the season and will occassionally buy some unusual plants that I am not likely to find at the swaps. This past week I bought a cute green and white hosta called Pandora's Box, one of the miniature hostas that only gets 3 or 4 inches tall. I also bought a steppable ground cover called Brass Buttons. Michelle bought a new lamium that we hadn't seen before and she got me a couple of ferns for Father's Day, a Ghost Fern and a Lady in Red Fern. But those are the only plants we have purchased this year.

James...I got a small division of Hosta Pandora's Box from Michigan Betty (Hagey) several years ago. I just love this plant. It's three years old now and still isn't bigger than a donut. But, it's so unique. Enjoy! I always put organic slug bait near it (Escar-go or Sluggo) because the slugs in my garden could eat it in one evenings meal! I want to protect it.

Oh my gosh -- what have I bought? (And yes, the S.O. is very cross that I've spent more than I should, LOL!) Just started a huge (approximately 100x8) foot bed plus some others this year, and luckily many friends thinned out their beds and gave me the extras. But I spent money on:
