Teeny Tiny, lime green to neon orange flying, biting insects
Comments (11)Actually, I found out what they are. They are in fact biting thrips! I've known what thrips are for ever, but never knew they bit us. Not all kinds bite people either. They are seasonal here, and are generally only out in the hottest parts of the day in direct sun. They are tiny for sure, about 1mm. Im glad its not those things you linked too! Thrips only bite people because they are attempting to find food. They rasp leaves and flower petals and suck up the slush they make by the rasping/ sucking of their mouthpiece. The only reason they bite people is because they are attempting to do the same thing to human skin. Once they find they cant do it, and thus get no food, they fly away or move to another part of the body and attempt again. They are annoying little buggers for sure, but usually leave no lasting affects in most people. Usually just a second or two of a tiny pin prick type itch / slight sting, and we either scratch or they fly off having not gotten any food. Very common bugs, and very VERY common in grassy areas, especially lawns....See MoreRed Ants Killing my Lawn
Comments (3)The heat from any boiling water you pour on those any hills will be dissipated by the soil before it gets down to the nest, that is just a large waste of your time, energy, and money. Ants nest where the soil is elatively dry and will move if the soil gets too wet for their liking, so simply put a hose where they are nesting and let the water run long enough to saturate the soil deep enough to affect them....See MoreLittle red spider bites
Comments (10)I was just out in the garage and I saw a couple of these tiny red spider-like bugs on the workbench that kind of zipped around in circles upon being disturbed--looked kind of cute, and I paid them no mind. A few minutes ago I came back in the house and was looking at a sheet of paper and felt something biting or stinging my bicep just above my elbow. I looked carefuly and saw one of these little red bugs right at the point it was beginning to feel like a sting. I swabbed it off with a moist sponge. Anyway I went online and came to this site. It was not a chigger. Make no mistake it was either biting or stinging me and gave quite an irritating stinging sensation not unlike a fire ant or mild bee sting. I rubbed some baking soda/water mixture on it and it is pretty much subsided after 20 minutes. I assure you I am now a little paranoid about these, whatever they are, and no longer see them as cute little harmless creatures. My first inclination was to think they were "red spider mites" but I don't really know. Any ideas?...See MoreItty bitty tiny black ants?
Comments (1)The ants probably aren't harmful directly, but they may be farming aphids on your plants. This probably wouldn't hurt your trees, but take a close look at your strawberries to see if you notice any aphids. If you do, insecticidal soap will work. Second, make sure they are not carpender ants. (I don't know anything about those, but I'd make sure they weren't before ignoring them). They can also be a nuisance in the kitchen where they get into food. You'll need to hire someone to make sure your house is well sealed to fix that. However, if they are not carpender ants and you don't see them in your house or any aphids on your plants, I wouldn't worry about them. They may simply be swarming. Ants will do that sometimes, but don't seem to hurt anything except maybe a bite on your skin. :)...See Moreaunt_lou
