Lasagna gardening question

Are any of you out there lasagna gardeners? I'm wanting to start some new beds (in readiness for the upcoming plant swap!!!!) and was wondering if I could make it easier on myself.

If I lay newspaper, compost, and a few inches of good garden soil down, do I still need to pull up the sod? Or will those layers kill the sod? Also, can I plant in it as soon as it's all laid out, or should I really wait until fall to plant in the lasagna beds?

I'm ready to dig and will do the beds my normal way (pull up the sod, cultivate some good organic matter in, and plant) if that's the best way for the plants. But to be honest, I'm hoping to create some relatively large beds and anything I can do to save time (and my back!) would be great.

All suggestions welcome!!

Gina
