Birds in their nests...can flowers be far behind?

Hi Kids,

Are any of you watching the nest cams over at the Cornell Lab site? They are busy with nest building, eggs and even new babies. This is where you want to go...

Look around and navigate to the nest cams. They have cams over Osprey, Blue Birds, five eggs that should hatch around the 5th of April, Tuftid Titmouse, seven eggs are now hatching, Barn Owles...funny looking things...and a few other nests that are not yet occupied.

This is a good site to keep us happy while we wait for the warm planting weather here in New England. Birds and gardening...a perfect combination. Enjoy!

I took a look at the nest cams and was amazed at how early they're nesting, thinking they were in the Cornell NY vicinity - then I noticed the nest locations, CA, KY, TX, AZ ...

The titmice (titmouses?) keep peering at the camera, but it doesn't seem to scare them.

Around here the birds are beginning to flirt and show interest in the opposite sex. The male cardinals no longer chase the female cardinals away from the feeders, and I've actually seen two downy woodpeckers (male and female) at the same time. Unheard of all winter.

Two crows were circling over head this morning, one of them with something in its mouth, and making non-cawing calls. I got the impression one had a gift for the other.

Breeding plumage is emerging: the goldfinchs are getting yellower, and all of the birds are brighter.

No flowers yet, but a few daffodil buds are peeking up.

We'll probably have a few more freezes, but we're definitely over the hill.

Hi Claire,

I noticed today that some of the early daffodil buds are turning yellow. They should be in full bloom within days. Others are far behind.

I noticed just yesterday that the Goldfinch are starting to turn and I saw my first Cardinal this weekend. We had several this past summer and into the fall, then they all went away. I am happy to see their return.

On the Cape, we still have almost two full months before we can plant any flowers or do much in the garden. So until the end of May, I look for color any place I can...even if it comes with wings...

Becky: I was out working in my swamp (formerly a yard) today and I noticed several sparrows in my new 'Kwanzan' Cherry. Then I saw the devil beetles take flight from the tree. I looked and the devils were trying to swallow the tree but the sparrows were after them. My roses are about 20 feet from the cherry tree and the sparrows then go to the roses and take the beetles out of the blooms. Sometimes they sit on a nearby rose branch and peck them. Other times, they hover and peck them. If the devils drop to the ground, the sparrows go down there and get them. After my new best buddies get a beak full of beetles, they go right to their nest and feed the kids.

tlbean, I hope you will forgive me if I seem presumptuous, but I am between gardens right now. We've just moved from North Carolina to Colorado and our temporary house is 'done'. So, I've enjoyed the last hour or so playing with your landscape design. I would like to share just a few of my experiences. I had quite a few Knockout roses in my NC landscape, in addition to David Austins, and other shrub roses. I did not find that the Knockouts were a problem. They will, indeed, get larger than 4x4 if they are happy and you allow it. I simply cut mine back to about 12" high in early March. In really good years, I occasionally cut some of the tallest branches back a bit in August, but no later than that. 2. If you do add liriope (I happen to like it as well), be sure to use the clumping variety. Otherwise, you will be cursing it as it spreads further into your beds as well as your lawn. You can cut it back in early March, as well. It is a myth that crepe myrtles should be pruned every year in order to get good flowering. Just read the 'Grumpy Gardener' column at www.southernliving.com. Camellia 'Shishigashira' is one of my favorites. However, it is quite slow growing. In the attached picture, I 'moved' one and added a second one along your driveway. They are so pretty in the fall when everything else is looking a bit tired. Their habit is very graceful. I could take 10 years or more for them to even get to 3 feet tall, so they will remain lost against the house. 5. I 'planted' your gardenia in the space between your windows so it has room to grow and adds softness to the wall. A Knockout on each side would give you good color from May until December, depending on your location in Zone 7. 6. The tree shaped shrub at the corner is Ilex crenata 'Steeds' (Steeds holly). It will give you some height without hitting your gutter. 7. Your dwarf Burford can withstand any kind of pruning you want to do. You can give it a hard pruning in early March. I sometimes pruned in mid-summer, too. If it looks messier than you want by the fall, wait until after a hard freeze to clean it up a bit. Be sure to use hand pruners - not hedge shears. That way, your cuts will be hidden. 8. You will see my bias toward mulched, curved beds. While they take a bit of time to edge (trench) in the beginning, and to get some good mulch put down, the health of your plants will be greatly improved, and cutting your grass will be much easier. Please forgive me if I've intruded too much. I really miss my own garden!

Thank you. Fedtschenkoana is spotless. None of its hybrids are. Hugonis hybrids vary from moderate to severely susceptible. Lynnie, Indian Love Call, Porcelain Rose, L56-1, Blue for You, First Impression seedlings (I lost FI in the move), Eyes for You, Art Nouveau, Gina's Rose, Anne Belovich, the four 0-47-19 X Tom Thumb ramblers, a number of seedlings between the above listed are completely without any spots on any leaves. Banksiae and Fortuniana are heavily spotted. 1-72-1Hugonis and 1-72-1Hugonis flore plena are lightly spotted as is ALmD, though the latter appears to be more locatoin dependent. The three are budded on VI Fortuniana and the one closeset to the hottest fence appears to be suffering the worst. The other two are spotless. All four Minutifolia variations are spot free. Xanthina, Primula, Arkansana Peppermint, Basye's Amphidiploid 86-1 and even Basye's Legacy are spotted. Secret Garden is nearly leafless from the spotting. Dr. E.M. Mills is spotless. Very few cases appear location dependent and some of the spotless plants have been badly crowded by plants which are completely leafless from the infection. All of the small, immature, newer Teas are defoliated with much die-back. Rosy Purple is totally clean, while many other hybrid multifloras are heavily spotted. Culling the worst offenders would definitely positively impact water useage!

I'm looking out the window as I type, and I see turkeys! Three females rooting around in the woodchips where I spread birdseed. The male is around the corner - he's been strolling around displaying - his feathers spread out just like in the pictures. Never saw that before. He's got the blue head and red neck and iridescent feathers - I'm sure the females are impressed.

I was about to go out and refill the feeders, but I don't want to disturb the turkeys (I also have a cat leaning against me who would resent my moving).

Spring is on the way! It's looking the other way right now, but it's coming.

Our house sparrows have moved into the birdhouse on the balcony. I just pulled in my hardier seedlings and rootstock, since it's going to be cold the next few days. You know that you're lucky when your beloved doesn't mind losing counter and windowsill space each spring for various containers filled with soil.
