sum and substance question

My S&S was looking very bad earlier this year with the drought and heat. It turned white on the edges, folded over on itself and now looks like this. Its done this every year since I have had it. Its gets sun off and on all morning and then hot afternoon sun. My husband built a pergola this year but didn't get this hosta covered until now. The color looks good. So I am wondering, did it do this because I couldn't keep up with watering, or does it do this because of the strong afternoon sun? I was looking thru the forum but didn't quite find an answer. My husband had to take down a lot of oak trees due to oak wilt and my once shady backyard is now mostly sun.

I feel like such a newbie asking but I guess its better to ask then to keep wondering if I should be doing something different.

Thanks, Jodi
