nandina cultivar for Cinti?

Good morning! Looking for a nandina cultivar that will do well in Cinti. We have one that we transplanted from Memphis, but it's looking as if it didn't make it through the winter. Any suggestions on one that would do well here-and where to find one-would be appreciated. Thanks

Check out David Francko's book Palms Won't Grow Here and Other Myths. He's based in the Cincinnati area and the book lists some Nandina varieties that do well locally.

I have a plant of 'Moyer's Red' that gets to about 3 feet each year in a south-facing foundation bed and dies back a bit in winter. Makes a nice show during the growing season.

I think someone asked a smiliar question before. Nandina is both a great shrub and dieback shrub, the later of which is how it will perform in zone 6. They do recover quickly, but are still best sited in a protected area. I've had "Firepower" that usually (not always) dies back to the snowline but regrows... Being a dwarf, it is often covered with snow which does help to insulate it and prevents further stem kill... It has great color in fall/winter...

I like the foilage of nandina as well as the fruit, so I wasn`t planting it solely for fruit. I don`t particularly care for most of the viburnums in that many are too large for "foundation" plantings and they aren`t that attractive in the late fall through the winter. I was hoping for some that didn`t grow as tall as 6' I don`t really like that look where every thing is sheared in formal shapes. I would rather have a nandina that would be shorter or could be kept smaller through selective pruning. Nandina isn`t invasive here, but I can understand the objections with invasive plants. The Natural History and conservation departments are fighting kudzu here because it is host to soybean rust as well as its aggressive tendencies. One person plants it as an ornamental and the rest of us spend a great deal of time and money fighting it.

It is listed as an invasive species in PA......maybe not the best choice :-) It is typically considered root hardy to zone 6 but foliage can suffer cold damage at various stages into zone 8, so exactly how evergreen the plant will remain in winter varies according to the severity of the winter. One source, which I cannot locate at the moment, even went so far as to list low temperature limits for the plant remaining fully evergreen, semi-evergreen, complete defoliation and total death. And different cultivars demonstrate differing degrees of "evergreen-ness". At a recent client visit, 'Plum Passion' in a somewhat protected location was completely defoliated (although new growth clearly evident) while a more exposed planting of the species experienced just a bit of foliage loss. The more compact forms, like 'Gulf Stream', often seem to experience less winter damage.

What kind of nandina is it? There are many dwarf or compact cultivars that grow quite slowly and never get very large. But even for the larger growing species, that plant looks to be in good shape for its size since planting and after experiencing some cold damage. In zones below 8 this shrub is really only semi-evergreen and can be severely damaged - like dieback to the root crown - in cold weather. IME, this is a very forgiving shrub, tolerant of both sun and shade and wide range of soil conditions. While it prefers a moist soil, it needs to be well draining and will also tolerate quite dry conditions as well. I don't believe I have ever watered one after the initial, new plant irrigation needs. I doubt you need to be watering it all.

I'm in Oxford,north of Hamilton ( which is north of Cinci). I don't know the cultivar of the one I have because I got it in a trade but it dies back every year and comes back. I'm thinking of moving it though because it never seems to get started early enough to get berries on it..it blooms but just barely before the frost gets it.
