As a hobby I enjoy programming Google Maps. Below is an interactive map link that shows some of the teaching/demonstration gardens in the greater Seattle area.

Tips for using the map:

* Click a marker for more info

* Zoom: Mouse wheel or the control in the upper left corner of the map

* Pan: Click-hold-drag

* Turn labels off: Click Menu ==> Labels On/Off

Thank you for posting this, Jelfff. You've obviously spent a great deal of time on this project. I noticed the lack of a pointer for Molbak's (situated in my faux wine country stomping grounds). Does it not offer any demonstrations?

While you have a good point, it was not my intent to put commercial gardens on the map. I revised the map title to include the word "Non_Profit". Thanks for helping me clarify the map.

The Olympic Mountains rain shadow Impacts the northeast Olympic Peninsula from Port Angeles to Port Townsend and also includes Coupeville and the San Juan Islands. This area receives less rain and more sun than Seattle. You can Google 'olympic rain shadow' to find a site that shows actual study results for comparison of rainfall and days of sunshine. I live in a place that averages half the rainfall of Atlanta, but 78% (!!) of that falls in the months from October through March. I retired here from the coast of Texas and the biggest adjustment has been latitude related. At the recent solstice we had 8.4 hours from sunrise to sunset. We make up for that during the summer when there are over 17 hours from sunrise to sunset. The lack of extreme heat or cold make this place almost a gardening paradise. Dahlias, roses, tulips, rhododendrons, daffodils and vegetables grow well even with more than a little neglect. The problem with tomatoes and eggplants is our mild summer temperatures. You can work around this by finding a way to add heat such as a greenhouse. If you are prone to SAD, this might not be the best place. When I considered this area, the lack of extreme cold, hail, tornadoes or hurricanes made it a positive for me. There are many more factors besides climate when deciding where to move or retire, e.g. nature, arts, proximity to water. I would suggest that you make a list, rank each of these considerations and then rate each place. This will give the best option for YOU. Bill

Oh, clubcracker, THANK YOU! Remodels are stressful, so that really did brighten my day. Here are 2 layouts using some of the ideas suggested above. DH loved the bar idea; I'm still trying to figure out how to manage a closet in that room now. I have to fit a dresser (for changing table), the xl twin bed, and a crib (later to be the second xl twin since it'll be a shared room). With two windows, it's a tough fit. I was hoping to save the original shelving in there. I wasn't able to draw the island to scale or in the style it would be, but the inspiration pic is above.

Hi All, My ten trees are gone. I may be downsizing more in the future and will repost if so. Mike and Laura, I couldn't let go of my Bouquet de Fleurs or Tango. It was so hard to let my babies go, but I feel confident they now have a good new home and caring owner - thank you junk4us!

Even in the few z9 locations in this area, this plant will not survive long term Full blown USDA 9 being present here debatable, hence such failures. Last time I looked record lows north of Coos Bay were all below 10 degrees F, with long term weather records expected to be the basis for Sunset mapping everything north of Gold Beach Sunset 5 or lower. Garden centers here sell the Musa lasiocarpa, I bought one on clearance in a 4 inch pot and planted it here last year. It grew significantly larger during the summer, I didn't think to protect it when the cold came and don't actually know what it looks like now. The 2014 edition of The Hillier Manual of Trees & Shrubs (Hillier Nurseries and The Royal Horticultural Society) says about this one Will survive outdoors, ideally with protection, in the mildest parts of the British Isles but in most places best overwintered in frost-free conditions so it wouldn't surprise me if mine is now a dead heap. Due to warming ocean currents the "mildest parts of the British Isles" actually go up as high as USDA 11 in the most southwestern islands (with - unlike here - Santa Barbara, CA style plantings long being present there, serving as proof). Claims of USDA 7 originating back East may be based on better results in hot summer climates. And probably also the prevailing misinterpretation of USDA Hardiness Zones, with it likely having been observed that the plant fails at 10 degrees F, is therefore "Hardy to USDA 7 (average annual minimum temperature 0 to 10 degrees F)".

Like some other nurseries Molbak's has some plantings in the parking lot that include some interesting specimens, but there is not comprehensive labeling of these. Inside the sales yard there has been a tiny vegetable demonstration bed in recent years.

The labels seem to dominate at some map resolutions. The hovered tip messages have a font size that I prefer. Is there any design option to simply number the balloons and have a numbered roster text box to the side?

A: No, but did you notice you can turn labels on and off? Click Menu ==> Labels On/Off.

Q: The labels seem to dominate at some map resolutions. The hovered tip messages have a font size that I prefer.
A: The map is based on Google Maps. The font size for the hover message has been hard-coded by Google and cannot be changed. However, you can change the font size for the labels by adjusting your browser settings. In Firefox go to Tools ==> Options ==> Content. Note that changing the font size in your browser will affect all websites you look at that are well-designed and respect the user's choice of font size.

Yes, during the initial viewing I did turn the labels off and that introduced the problem: The labels were off; you can then only view one hover-label at a time.

The browser font-size tip is a good one.

Your mapping effort is very useful; if it had been of the Portland metro area, I would use it on occasion. Do you have any way via server logs or other metrics to know how many visits your particular map is getting?
