PS - The lot faces southwest and gets a lot of sun but our yard has a bit of a drainage problem and is always rather damp.

For rustling leaves the best is aspen. Root barrier would have to be installed to keep it from growing where not wanted, and some bacterial blackening of leaves may be seen - as with other plant problems, this varies between sites from rather nasty to pretty much absent. And the crown shape would be right. It can grow tall but is not a chunky tree with heavy, broad branches.

Otherwise you could try French pink pussy willow. No rustling leaves effect but you get fragrant catkins in winter and the crown shape is right.

Both trees grow on damp ground and have been prevalent at local outlets in the recent past. This area is part of the very large natural range of aspen, bona fide native patches here seem to be mostly confined to bogs and similar locations.

How about a river birch such as Betula nigra 'Cully'? We have one that looks great and loves moisture.

Those grow quite broadly when not shaded from the sides enough to be prevented from doing so. For example, a river birch at the Museum of Flight, Tukwila, WA had an average crown spread of 98' during 1992. A second example on the same site was 86' across the same year.

Marymoor Park, Redmond, WA had one 82' across during 1987.

I second the quaking aspen, for rustling leaves and growing with a drainage problem.

Just be aware that they don't color so boldly in fall here as they do in high elevation areas, as well as the leaf spotting bboy mentions. But the ones in my neighborhood are still pretty nice trees.

Please consider a Katsura tree. Cercidiphyllum japonicium. Lovely lovely tree. Slender oval, often with a couple of trunks. Very fast growing when young - ours topped 20' in 5 years then slowed a bit. After 20 years it's about 50' but still a slender oval.

The leaves are smooth, heart-shaped, light green with pink stems. They flutter like aspens but I think the tree is actually more graceful.

And you can use the foliage for flower arrangements
