Idiots Avaunt 14 AHS Convention Tour Gardens water features

Most of the tour gardens had water features... here are some shots!

(PS - I have a lot more photos... if you'd like me to keep posting, let me know I should continue and am not just bugging people... thanks!)

There were giant ponds, bridges, water falls, lots of different features... but I was very taken by this simple one - a hose up in the tree just dripped into a clay tray... the birds came and left from this active little bird bath... and the sound was soothing...

And a simple little blue bubbler sure adds a nice touch tucked in amongst the hostas...

Pretty impressive... huge pond with a great Japanese bridge...

Oh my! Spectacular photos. I love the hose and basin idea and may steal that. Also love the blue bubbler among the hosta. Also love the Japanese bridge and koi pond...also love...etc. etc. etc. PLEASE keep posting!

the few, puny ones that I have!

The 4th pic from the bottom, Jim--is that taken at 'Hidden Lakes'?

From my brief time in a portion of Australia (granted, the portion where the majority of Australians live) I can say the gardening culture there is more "serious" than the US. (Not that it would take much lol.) It is a commonwealth country after all, settled mostly by the English. It definitely helps that it's a climate where year round gardening is possible. Even though they seemingly have a lot of land and very few people, much of the outback isn't suited to conventional agriculture. So the land use patterns reminded me more of Europe (the UK specifically) or the denser parts of the US. Melbourne and Sydney and their suburbs would remind people much more of London or the San Francisco Bay area than say, Atlanta. Even if the climate differences weren't taken into account. There isn't miles and miles of exurban sprawl with hundreds of thousands of housing units on well and septic. It's denser suburbs clustered around commuter rail lines that often quickly give way to open agricultural land past where the lines end. When people have a limited amount of land and/or places with over 1/4 acre of land are hard to purchase and insanely expensive, they tend to make more with what they've got. Just for kicks, for example, I looked for places for sale in the Blue Mountains with 1 hectare or more of land. It would be at least 5x harder and maybe 2X as expensive to buy such places as in say, the outer suburbs of Philly, DC, or Baltimore. Exceptions would be, for example, the Dandenongs outside Melbourne, where there is a lot of older, sometimes stately housing stock on larger lots and quaint village centers, sort of similar to say, Bucks Co, PA, Weston, MA, North Shore of Chicago, etc. (even the western US ended up a little more like Europe in this regard, especially California, more because of water and geographical issues than an absolute shortage of land) But, again, because people had to pay more for such acre or more properties than they would have in various American cities, they are making the most of the garden space. And some of the private gardens I saw driving around were very impressive.

It is definitely difficult for nurseries and farms to stay in business. Given the high cost of fuel lately and the fact that their land is often worth 'muli millions' of dollars it is hard to blame a farmer eeking out a living selling out to a developer. I try to do 95% of my plant buying and shopping at local nurseries and only 5% at box stores. Often I don't buy anything at the box stores in a season because the selection of plants (not just the quality) isn't what I am looking for. I can agree that they are a good source for beginning gardeners just getting started with their common plant varieties offered (tried and true) but at what cost to local nurseries? Idabean I too like New England Nurseries in Bedford, Mass. They definitely carry different types of uncommon annuals, perennials, container plants etc. than you can find other places. I think their prices are fair and they have coupons in the local papers for deals. Anyone here just getting going in gardening don't be scared off thinking that local nurseries are much higher in prices and avoiding them. Definitely check them out you may be pleasantly surprised they are quite competitive with the box stores and offer plants you are unfamiliar with or only available through mail order.

nhbabs: Do you think the hawks are hunting something, like voles, near your house? Or maybe considering a nesting site close by? I saw the first Baltimore Orioles of the season today! and it's before the hummingbirds show up - usually the orioles come a little after the hummers. The grackles had gobbled up most of the suet outside and the orioles were picking at the scraps. I raced out and put new suet in all of the cages and added some apricot preserves in a dish. This one came back but didn't seem too impressed with the new suet. He did seem to be looking down at the preserves in the dish in the middle of the feeder. When they start showing interest in the fruit I'll phase out the suet in those cages to discourage the grackles. I have another suet feeder up in another area. Claire

On the Idiots episode with the water features from the tour, Ken told a funny story about a water jug... and no, it wasn't me... I was too busy oohing and aahing over what was the most interesting hosta I saw the whole tour... Jim,love the pics of water features! I only wish I lived on flat ground,in order to be able to do it! It's hard to have water stand still when your garden is on the side of a mountain! I'd just settle for the little creek down in my garden to have enough water to run better. We have to have a major deluge for it to even have water in it! More pics,please! Phil

Love your pictures, it's very hot here too and looking at them does make me feel cooler. I especially like the one with the koi just under the surface of frothy water. Please post more.

Love, love, love the pictures! Please keep posting as they are inspiring. I really like the pond surrounded by hostas. Who cares about housecleaning when there are pictures to look at?

good eye, Heyj... that is the hillside waterfall/stream at the Benededict display garden at Hidden Lake - that's where our bus stopped for lunch - and a couple of us came away with some nice discounted troughs from the gift shoppe.

I like the way volunteers care for the Benedict garden, but I was disappointed to see a number of the hostas mislabeled. Still... good that people care enough to maintain it...

and Phil... I'd give my best trowel to have enough hillside drop to have a "pondless waterfall..." - an ideal recycling waterfall for someone in your boat...

hey.. where is my 5 gal jug of drinking water in a galvanized wash tub... that was next to the cookie table .????

during the show.. some guy was standing there.. getting more and more irritated.. while scratching his chin..

amy finally realized what was going on and said... that is drinking water for the cookies.. NOT GARDEN ART .... he was startled.. laughed.. and walked away chuckling ...

I love water features and water in the garden!

I bought a two tiered fountain this spring to put in the sun garden, it recycles the water with a solar pump. Second day he saw it, grandson tipped it over on the ground and broke the bowl and the pump.

He said the water was dirty and he was emptying it so he could put fresh water in. ~sigh~ I know he was telling the truth because he regularly empties the hard, resin birdbath and re-fills it. At 8 years old, he should have asked first!

Please keep posting your pictures! I appreciate your "eye."

My family rarely likes my photos because my eye keeps getting caught by little things which seem to me to tell the story of the place - they want those big pictures which you can find on postcards and which my camera could never reproduce!

The pond with the japanese bridge, the big pond and waterfall and the pond within the trees with the buddah look like Mick's (Milton) pond, here in Michigan.
