Forget Me Nots and fall planting

Can I seed my flower beds where I want to grow native forget me nots now and let the seed overwinter or do I have to wait until Spring? I'd like to seed the beds now and let the seed start naturally and as early as they can. Thanks.

I have not grown forget me nots specifically but seeds of most common perennials should germinate in the spring if planted in the fall.

gfult, One of the forget me nots is actually a biennial, so it grows in year one and in year two it blooms (usually in May or early Jun), sets seed and dies.. Presumably it will self sow after it sets seed, but many gardeners are tidy and clip off the brown stems with the dead seed heads which prevents this from happening. As cheesy says above, if you have a place for forget me nots, they will make a beautiful blue focal point in spring, maybe for years to come. Lots of seeds to harvest on that forget-me-not, which as ken says is done for the season. Cut it back - it'll shortly turn into a really dark, crispy, dead looking thing - but scatter the cuttings wherever you might want them to sprout. Very welcome plant in my gardens - I have them everywhere and they're just picking up real steam here now. Easy to pull up if they land somewhere inconvenient.

I'm afraid you have left it too late to get flowers next spring with your tulips. They need sowing June - August to flower April to June. Not sure if you realise this but they aren't perennial. They are biennial ie sow one year, flower next year, die after flowering. Mine self sow and are already big robust plants which will flower in the spring. Maybe you will have to buy plants this year. Another thing that occurs to me is that your botanical tulips will be fairly short and unless you choose a particularly small cultivar of forget-me-not even they might overtop or hide the tulips.

Yes, the blue is perfect, and they are just charming. I will try to direct sow part of my seeds, save some to WS, just press them in the ground a little, and see what happens. Will try to keep them in groups because of weeding. That's why I don't like to broadcast seeds. Thanks for the tip about cutting back and shaking. Some annuals do perform more like perennials in Georgia, may even here in Iowa, but I'm still learning. It says annual on the sack of seeds. Maybe they will perennialize in the right spot; window boxes are hardly a fair test. You'd think whatever it was I stuck in there I would have noticed because the seeds are larger and slightly prickley. I sure don't remember planting this kind in that box. As long as mine get a few blooms and have time to set seed, that will be good enough for this year.

The only risk you take is that critters will eat the seed or wind and water could wash them away. Wintersowing is another option. See the forum for info.

I have wintersown native forget me not the last two years. I get great germination. A couple of plants even flowered the first year, very late.

Which native forget-me nots are you thinking of sowing? Do you know the latin name? I grow the native Myosotis laxa, known as Small Forgetmenot in this area, but I started with actual plants, rather than seeds. Some other common forgetmenots are NOT native to North America. They are the ones usually seen in gardens and for sale in nurseries.
