Wildflower wedding

I am attempting to use wildflowers in my June 2, 2007 wedding in Siler City, NC and I need some advise.

My sister and I were planning on starting wildflowers from seed in late March - is this appropriate? Also, should we plant them in the small plastic containers so as to easily insert these containers into the centerpiece containers (old galvanized watering cans/pails) on the wedding day?

Does anyone have advise as to where I can get wildflower seed packets?

What wildflowers to you want? Some seeds need pretreatment before sowing, you may need to buy seeds now and start pretreatment in order to be ready to plant in March. Do you want large bouquets of blooms or small plants in your containers? Seeds started in March may not be very large or blooming by June.

You will need to research which flowers to plant, you will want fast growing annuals that bloom in spring or early summer if you want flowers for June. You will also need to research how long the plants you choose take to grow to blooming size and make sure you sow them early enough to be in bloom by June. Finally, you will likely need an indoor grow light centre to get fast growth.

I would suggest going to your local library and signing out some seed growing books.

If you have never grown plants from seed and having flowers for June is essential, you might want to contact a nursery or florist, see what they can source, and price it out as a plan "B".

Some brides are interested in growing their wedding flowers. Some purchase flowers from a flower farm and do their own arranging. Some prefer to have a flower farm do the arrangements. And, many purchase from a florist who is supplied by local flower farms. Wildflowers are perennial plants. Seeds for these are planted in the fall. Some of the wildflowers featured in the link to wildflowers in Upstate New York are either considered invasive or protected. One example: Loosetrife. Many are in bloom well before Labor Day. I'm going to assume you are interested in the wildflower look as opposed to actual wildflowers. Some brides feel zinnias, scabiosa, rudbeckia, daisies, larkspur and foxglove fall into this category. The seeds for these are available from Johnny Seeds in Maine. One can order online or from the catalog. The catalog contains helpful information as far as planting and spacing. If you need flowers to supplement yours, a flower farm sells blooms by the stem at the Dupont Square Market in Washington D.C. Wishing you all the best. Wildflowers need to be planted at different times. For spring, wildflowers such as oxeye daisy, batchelor buttons, poppies, nigella, blue flax, butterfly weed...need cold temps (or they take a while to come to flower) to germinate so you plant them in Dec-early Jan. Others like to be planted in spring such as cosmos, zinnias, helenium etc. I hope this helps, GGG

Tumbleweeds and Wildflowers

I was a florist for over twenty years but tumbleweeds in wedding bouquets is a new one for me. Is there a story there? There are loads of tumbleweeds in Central OR, I just saw many by the side of the road caught in fences when I went to Redmond for the 4th. Some of the farm stands have U pick flowers. The Barn on 148th in between Marine Dr. and Airport Way does and there are some on Sauvie Island. Don't know if they have flowers suitable for drying. You might call.

june is still pretty early in nc....i agree, make sure you have a plan B. there are some early bloomers out there. you got some great resources already.
