Why do the seed companies recommend planting seeds in cold weather? Well, honestly it's because that is when some things should be planted. ;) Peas, leafy greens, and the cole crop family immediately come to mind - mostly because they won't tolerate heat. But they leave it up to the gardener as to when the proper planting time for their zone may be and when their soil is workable. Granted there is always a chance of freak weather, but assuming proper planting techniques are used, the seeds should germinate fine. Usually, this time of year supplemental watering isn't needed or at least not much, so perhaps she over-watered them or planted too deep? But without knowing exactly what seeds she planted and how, can't really say what the problem may be. Dave

I have been growing hardneck varietiees of garlic here in SE MA for many years. I have always followed my late July harvest with plantings of both yellow wax and green bush beans and the plantings have always been very productive.. I plant in 4X8 ft. raised beds and just use gardentone and Neptunes Harvest sparingly. Also plant some lettuce for a late harvest in the garlic bed and occasionaly some radishes. They all do well. I think that there is far too much emphasis on this companion planting business. Rotating for disease prevention is a judicious consideration but for the home gardener with a little plot, the issue tends to get carried away. Just plant, weed and have fun.

What I read is that it doesn't get cool enough at night in Florida for them. Since we almost always fall into the 60s even in the dead of summer maybe a Michigan summer will be up their alley. It will be weird on 90 degree days having to move them INSIDE in July or August. Sound like no one in this forum has tried. I'll keep everyone updated.
