Tickseed Sunflower

I bought a very small plant of this at Mercer Arboretum's spring sale here in Houston, TX. It is now finally blooming - the bloom looks very much like a tickseed coreopsis but it has a very nice fragrance, which I didn't expect. I find, in reading about it, that it prefers moist prairies - a totally different climate than we have. I'm looking forward to collecting seeds and planting it for next year.

It fills the fields around here in the fall. A pilot friend said he knew when he was near home because of the solid yellow field sized patches. It is a great plant. Do you get much rain in late summer early fall in your part of Texas? Some years when we've had a long drought the plants grow less than two feet tall instead of the normal 6 to 8 feet.

You never know when or if it's going to rain here. We haven't had much lately. We had the hurricane blow through but the strongest portion missed us (Rita). It was 100 deg. the day before it blew through, and I wouldn't water because I just KNEW that we would get lots of rain. We got about 1/2 inch so it was looking pretty bad by the time I got around to watering it. It is probably 4 to 5 ft. tall, because I had watered it all summer. I have read where it grows in the midwestern states but was surprised to find it grows in New Jersey.

Without an image it is difficult to say. But I can say that there are various species of helianthus that are blooming right now. They are mostly if not all yellow flowers, common wild plants, and they are very vigorous plants as a rule. Compare to those and see if any are matches. Thanks everyone for helping me with this! The leaves on the yellow Bidens should have been the giveaway. I was only familiar with the white ones (B. bipinnata) that lines the roads in late summer and fall. Another possibility for the species is mitis. I think you all are right about the first one being a Coreopsis. Below is a link to a page where two species of sunflowers are compared. The narrow leaf one I bought at a local native nursery, where it was sold as H. salicifolius. I dug the wide leaf one up from a friends yard - it was all over the place. The wide leaf one looks to me more like H. simulans (Muck Sunflower), but I had mistakenly thought it was H. angustifolius. The page below has links to more photos of each plant. This exact plant mysteriously appeared in a low, swampy area of our lawn this summer. The foliage was lovely, with layers of lacy, open compound leaflets so I left it grow. When it exploded in cheery bright yellow daisy-like blooms I was thrilled! I studied multiple sites, and found it was the annual Bidens, also called Beggar ticks or Tickseed Sunflower. Birds often eat the seeds, so I think they deposited the seeds since we're a Backyard Wildlife Habitat. We can look forward to seeing more next year since they seed easily!
