What is the latin/proper name of this mushroom???

These are growing in mountains of Pennsylvania. There they are called stumpies. The black stuff in the picture is a rock..these grow in coal country and almost everyone has once of these rocks attached. I have eaten these all of my life and want to know what is the scientific name for them.

I'm thinking it's Armillaria mellea, what we call the Honey Mushroom here in the Puget Sound region. Very tasty! The species is quite variable in appearance, but a couple of things I always look for are: 1) Pull, cut or otherwise split the stem end-to-end. Inside it looks soft & cottony. 2) Tiny darkish bumps or scales on the cap, darker towards the center. 3) Almost always found in groups of some kind often in cespitose clumps

Are you in Schuylkill County by chance? I've eaten "stumpies" in Frackville, PA a few time!

Looks like a type of "Stinkhorn" to me. If it's like mine, they stink really bad... such that you can smell them 20 feet away. I'd say "Kill it ASAP", but from what I understand it's just a manifestation of the fungi that are already in the soil. But, at least removing it would prevent the flies from pollinating it and hopefully slow their spread. -Glenn

Sounds like The Flower Pot Parasol, or "Spirit Cap" (latin name: Lecocoprinus Birnbaumii). Those yellow mushrooms are beautiful and harmless to the composting process, or your flowerpots, should you ever catch them growing there...as that's the most common place to appear. While the reports on it's actual toxicity are still out, they should be considered inedible because a small percentage of people have reported severe gastrointestinal upset from consuming them. But no, they won't harm your composting and in fact, they're helping speed it along by breaking down complex carbohydrates and cellulose into simpler sugars which will be further consumed when they, themselves begin to rot. Barbara, I think the 'Lemon Spire' is just a renaming for what is in reality 'Suecica Aurea'. This could be for it's Latin name which doesn't say nothing for a lot of people. The #2 isn't a Juniperus communis, it's a Juniperus chinensis and it's cultivar name is 'Aurea'...

Doubt they're Armillaria because those mushrooms grow from wood not black rocks.
