Red Pine Lily - in the wild

Found this (Lilium catesbaei) growing down in the wet bottom.

Took the photo last month, the show lasted a week or so.

Needless to say I was very happy with this find.

It was blooming in two places, about 100' apart.

I've had this land 20yrs, they have never bloomed until now.

They are now getting more light, since Hurricane Katrina. In addition, I got in there afterwards, chain saw in hand, then followed up with several low intensity burns over the past 5yrs.

Voila, conditions are right.

Gorgeous! I'm sure you are right about what happened. So glad the lily was there when the right conditions came along.

Beautiful pics of a gorgeous lily. That's great it could grow successfully after the changes to your land. Do you manage it for a particular purpose i.e. to control invasive plants?

Here is another source for Twin Sisters that is a bit more reasonable American Daffodil Farm 20 for $34.95 or 40 for $59.00. There is also an ebay seller that has them for sale, but I would not advise buying them from anyone who would be selling and shipping them at this time of the year. They would either be bulbs left over that should have been planted last fall, or else they are being dug now which is certainly not a good time at all. They make no mention of 'fall shipping' or even shipping well after the bloom season for their auction. I'd even be suspicious if they would be the correct cultivar, since they seem to know very little about daffs and the correct time to sell, plant, and ship.

Jeremy, I'm in the midwest and I do grow them. I don't know about the flooding aspect but I do know that they grow quite freely in your area. I have clay soil and planted my bulbs 6 inches, it might work its way deeper. Please note that it might 1 to 3 years for it to bloom. My first one took 2 years before it finally bloom but so worth it.

As ash ga wrote, it was probably because of the changes that allowed/encouraged it to flower. I suspect the plant as been there for some time, but was not getting enough sun.
Fire stimulates an amazing number of our natives.

I do a lot of work to manage for wildlife in general.
Food production and shelter.
Two or three "open" areas get burned frequently, once every year or two. Some is deep, mature woods, not much to do there. Constantly looking for Invasives.
They are removed with extreme prejudice. :)
Chinese privet/ligustrum is the worst.
