Echinacea paradoxa?

Hi,

Anyone ever grow Echinacea paradoxa? It's yellow with a big brown cone in the middle. I bought one at a local nursery this week. Anyhow have it?

Planted it first time this spring. I bought one at a nursery, and then found some small 4" pot seedlings at a stand selling them as herbs. Hope they grow well, but have fingers crossed for this winter.

I've had them for around 7 yrs I want to say. The only time I had a problem was when I wanted one moved and my husband didn't hear me say it has a long taproot, so he didn't get all of it and that one died. I've had them at 3 different houses now.

I just wanted to share my "seed" starting of this plant. It worked better to start these in a damp paper towel in an open baggie than in pots...I got GREAT results and now I have lots of baby Paradoxas. My Orange Meadow Brite was good too. Most of my other Ech's did so-so started in pots, but the Paradoxa did better with the damp paper towel method. knotz

Hey Ech, i just did seeds for the 2008 season of paradoxa. I started them indoors. All season, they made a ton of leaves. I didn't expect them to do anything at all, especially as the season was wrapping up and my other echs where done. Then late fall after a frost. I was clearing some leaves from the paradoxa and down at the crown of the plant was a full sized flower. it looked like someone took a flower and jammed it down into the center of the plant. I pulled it, thinking it wasn't real.. and it popped off. The stem was about 2 inches. I checked the other plants, and a few had the same thing going on. So they can bloom the first year. Hopefully they will do a bit better this coming year. The end.

It means paradox, and the paradox is it's the only Echinacea to have yellow flowers.

Karen: "I've done a little reading and from what I've read it isn't unusual for E. paradoxa to take a few years to flower. I'm growing some from seed right now and I know it'll be at least three years before I see flowers." I tried planting some of the seeds in a pot last fall. I eventually brought them in, and they all died. :) Thanks for the info. I wish there were better documentation on the Internet about how long you may have to wait to see flowers. echinaceamaniac: "Prairienursery.com is a good source of paradoxa if you are impatient like me." Thanks--I'll have to remember that. I got mine from Park Seed in Greenwood, SC. Maybe their plants aren't as good. "Patience is important with paradoxa." Maybe they should rename it "Echinacea waitforevera." LOL. "It gets more beautiful every year. It is still the only yellow Echinacea that is worth growing. The hybrid varieties all seem to have something weak about them. They tend to decrease each year in size. Their blooms are fuller and larger; however, they don't compare as far as hardiness goes." I'm glad that I don't have a hybrid then. :)

Has anyone grown this from seed? I tried last year and nothing germinated for me. Am not even sure if this thing is hardy in my zone but I really want to give it a try.

I grew it 3 years ago from seed. This year one of my trees grew to where it gets some afternoon shade and it didn't like it, so will be moved this spring to full sun again.

I've been growing Echinacea paradoxa (Bush's Coneflower) here in S.E. MN for over 10 years. Seeds can be fall planted or cold moist stratified for several months if planting in spring. My soil varies from silt to clay loam and plants seem to tolerate moist to dry conditions and our occasional -25F. temps. I've also found it easy to transplant when dormant in the early spring or late fall.
Most of the Echinaceas will cross and you can get some interesting hybrids by gowing E. pallida, E. tennesseensis, or E. angustifolia next to each other. Bill
