so are there any Pink wildflowers?

I was planning a new wildflower area. It's about 160 ft X 20ft. A roadside area. I've picked out the seeds that I have grown before and I know will be good for our area. I was going to do mass planting with colors. I've divided the area up into three areas. Then I realized I have no pink wildflowers. I wanted to do a Pink and white area. Any suggestions for pink,this is for North Texas zone 7b, Clay soil. Drought tolerant is required.

Cosmos bipinnatus

Pale purple coneflower? {{gwi:1068289}}

Phlox paniculata? Not sure if that meets the growing criteria. Here's a nice Texas page.

Centaurea biebersteinii - Spotted knapweed This is one of the most invasive plants in dry soils of Michigan. Definitely not native. The adult plant produces a potent chemical from its roots that kills surrounding native plants and prevents the seeds of native plants from germinating. It makes a seed bed for its own seeds, and thus spreads across the landscape wiping out native biodiversity and replacing it with a purple, single species haze. It is a big problem across much of the northern US. Literally millions of acres of rangeland in the western US that once provided food for cows (and thus food for you and I) are now deserts of invasive Centaureas, which are not food for cows. The orange lily is an Asiatic Daylily. They are common in gardens and have escaped all over the northeast US. They don't spread by seed. Instead you could just dig up a few plants making sure to get the root which is a tuber. The second plant looks like Queen Anne's Lace. The flowers will turn brown at which point you can cut the flower head and shake out lots of seeds. This is easy to grow, and in fact is probably srouting in your garden already. THe first year the plants grow a bit like a dandelion but with very lacy leaves. They flower in their second year of growth. The third is in the pea and bean (legume) family. I am not sure what species it is. The smaller yellow ones were probably Birdsfoot trefoil, which is an agricultural crop similar to alfalfa or clover that commonly escapes to grow wild. The vine sounds like a Morning Glory. There are many wild species. Jerusalem Artichoke is a wild sunflower and could be the plant you see. Ther are other similar species of wild sunflower too. I think all are great garden plants. They will spread so give them some room, but they are easy to grow and flower from July thru September. If you are searching for info on a plant, try a search enginer like Google. Go to Google.com and enter the name of the plant. You'll get thousands of pages for almost any plant as long as it is spelled correctly.

Looks like Coreopsis tinctoria, annual tickseed or plains coreopsis, which is a widespread native annual. I'm not sure but it probably is native to Vermont. Like most annuals it pops up in disturbed sites or in areas that have naturally sparse vegetation (such as very poor soils). Pink wildflowers that will do well on roadsides in north Texas include Wild Bergamot - Monarda fistulosa, and coneflowers. There is the Pale Purple Coneflower - Echinacea pallida?, and Purple Coneflower - Echinacea purpurea, which really is more pink than purple.

The cosmos shown above isn't native to the US, so I wouldn't call it a wildflower. It is an easy to grow annual that might be a good choice for the first year or so before the perennials fill in. Don't plant the cosmos too thick or they will shade the others and the others will be slower to fill in.

Oh ladyslppr, thanks for that correction. Apparently it is native to Mexico? I could've sworn that I verified that.

Cosmos parviflorus is a native one (also appears to be pink).

I am not sure which of these of are appropriate for your zone, but these are pink natives that I am familiar with...

Some fleabanes are pink. Or they start out pink and fade to white. I had a great crop a few years ago and they were charming. Fleabanes are leggy plants that sometimes fall over late in the season. The blossoms are tiny. They re-seed decently.

The Rose Pink, Sabatia angularis, is my favorite pink one.

Does anyone here know where I might buy seed? It occurs some years and not others on a rocky couth facing road cut on our property. I thought I'd see if I could bring into the garden.

There are pink versions of you native winecups (Calirohoe involucrata)which grow along the roadsides in your area. I have them in my garden up here in PA. White, pink, and the deep wine color all come out as seedlings.

i've seen a wild phlox here in indiana that's a very attractive pink...also, there's a wild thistle that's illegal to cultivate here that's just wonderful in bloom, and i'd grow it if i didn't fear the human authority figures....stupid government :(
