We've grown Indian Pink (Spigelia marilandica) for more than 10 years andnever lost it. Montréal;by definition is a cold USDA zone 5 with ours regular -30C and very often thin snowcover. So you shoul feel confident.

Has survived -22 Celcius (-8 F) for me and grew vigorously.
Untroubled by pests, adaptable and handsome, though flower display is brief and no Fall color to speak of.

michel60, i noticed the comment "thin snow cover." that is important! many things often do not survive without that insulating blanket of snow. also, since we are getting less snow, good to know!

Rx, great news about pests and adaptability! that is important since most of my plants are "on their own." i had no idea zone 6b gets that low.

This was the lowest ambient air temperature I have ever recorded here - far from usual.
Elliottia, Illicium, Cyrilla, Leitneria, Chionanthus pygmaeus and a bunch of other tender weirdos came through ok, too. Not much snow cover.

Can't speak to the cold winters but mine flowered at least three weeks this spring, and was trying to set buds again in late summer, but it was too droughty I think, so the buds failed. In spite of the drought the plants never wilted after being established, but when first planted they were very sensitive and needed to be shaded and watered, in spite of a generally wet spring.

Fairy TM, did you get your Pinkroot and did it survive?

I was given a huge clump (lucky me!) a couple of weeks ago. It's blooming now and I think it's so pretty. I may have made a huge error, but I potted mine. I have it in a sheltered NE corner of the porch step. I plan on mulching it and keeping my fingers crossed. I am South of you and I think I hover between zones 5 and 6.

hello. yes i did, but as far as i can tell it suffered winter kill. then again, i lost a lot of things. there is something growing where i planted it, but it looks too much like a lily. i don't know what kind it could be! i think you will have better luck than i.

Growing 3 clumps of it in Central Jersey and it has yet to bloom this season but it was late to emerge and had difficulty in ID ing it until I discovered one clump with ID stake which I use until I get used to seeing a new plant. I will be interested to see when and how well it will bloom for me.

you know, i have an id stake right there! but those lily looking leaves sure don't look like what i planted! :)
