tell me about fruit trees (Boston area)

We'd like to plant a fruit tree this year. I think the top contender is a peach, but we're open to suggestions.

We live in the city, so our yard isn't very big. Because of this, we probably only want one tree, and we probably want some sort of dwarf variety. I say that we only want one tree, but it's also true that our neighbor, with and even smaller yard, has 3 trees...so maybe I'm more conservative than I need to be.

I know that certain types of fruit trees, such as apples, require a second tree (or a grafted tree) for pollination. I understand that peaches don't require this, but I also know that apples keep a lot longer than peaches, which is one of the reasons that I keep coming back to that.

We also don't expect to be in this house forever, so getting a tree that will start producing fruit sooner rather than later is particularly attractive.

I'm also a little unclear about "dwarf" and "semi-dwarf" and other things such as "li'l big" that I've seen in some of the gardening catalogs. I'm sure I don't want a full-sized tree, but beyond that, I don't quite know what I should aim for. I'm not even quite sure where to start.

Is there any place in the greater Boston area (preferably to the north rather than to the south) where I could go buy fruit trees in person, and speak to knowledgeable staff?

Can any of you help me more?

If it were me, I'd talk to the fruit tree specialist at your county extension office---they're a wealth of information. Additionally, it may or may not be too late to get in on some hands-on Spring fruit tree pruning seminars. You'll get a chance to see what's actually involved in growing fruit trees and you would get to see different size trees or the sizes that trees can be maintained at. It's good stuff for a beginner. Walking around an orchard on a cold, wet dreary March morning brings back great memories :-)

From my personal experience, south of Boston,as a person who was inclined to spray minimally, I would guess the pears were the easiest to grow, followed by, in no particular order, peaches (Redhaven was best)Japanese plums, pluots and apricots. The apples were a pain.

When you buy a fruit tree, the variety that you choose is grafted onto the trunk and root system of another tree (aka rootstock). The height and general size of the resulting tree is controlled by the type of rootstock on which the fruiting part of your tree is grafted. Thus, you can have a full size tree which can range anywhere from 20-40 feet tall, or a semi-dwarf which is roughly 12-25 feet tall, or a dwarf which is around 8-12 feet tall. It's quite common to find fruit trees that are columnar in shape which are roughly 5-10 feet tall and very narrow at approx 2 ft wide.

If you want a tree that serves as both a fruit tree and an ornamental feature to your yard then I would recommend a semi-dwarf. If you are planting this strictly for fruit then you want a dwarf or columnar tree because both are small and you can plant several in a small area which removes the pollination problem. All fruit trees bear much more fruit when pollinated with a different variety. Some trees may not need a pollinator but they will not have as heavy of a crop as with a pollinator nearby. If you have a particular variety of apple that your family likes, a quick Google search will tell you which pollinator that you need for it

You mentioned that you were leaning toward apples because they last longer that other fruit such as peaches. Keep in mind that by canning the fruit, they will last for months. You can also make jelly, jam, or preserves that also last for a long time when canned properly. Canning may sound difficult but it's really not. A Google search will produce pages that give you instructions for doing it.

You may get more bang for your buck by planting some fruiting shrubs such as blueberries or cranberries. You can also build or buy ornamental structures that you can grow fruit on such as a strawberry tower. I use strawberries as a ground cover in one of the foundation beds around my house. It's not a very large bed but I get tons of strawberries from it before the perennials that I have planted there come up and bloom.

I wouldn't bother buying a tree from a local nursery. You can get a much larger variety to choose from online and it's delivered to your door. I've ordered from Stark Bros. and Burnt Ridge Nursery and have received fine quality plants from both of them.

Despite the freak frost that wiped out our avocado, banana, and guava trees, because of the hot weather before and after January our area still only tallied up 350 chilling hours, not nearly enough to justify the apples that are fruiting for me. Meanwhile, Im still waiting for my 5-year-old August Pride apricot to blossom or fruit (which is supposed to be low-chill). So I cannot totally credit a yearÂs crop to the meager cold we get, as there can be several factors, one of which is bi-annual tendencies of some cultivars. Anna and Dorsett Golden have been their usual maniac selves and will harvest early this year, in about a month, and we just made a cobbler from our Florida King peach. On the other hand, many apples are fruiting in their second year that shouldnÂt fruit here at all. We have pea to golf-ball sized apples on Wickson Crab, Kerr Crab, Whitney Crab, Thornberry Crab, Terry Winter, Rome Beauty, Gala, AshmeadÂs Kernel, Queen Cox, WilliamÂs Pride, Ribston Pippin, Snow, Braeburn, Tarbutton, Hawaii, Pink Lady, Coop 37, Coop 40, Coop 41, Gordon, Gold Rush, Royal Limbertwig, Freyberg, Kandil Sinap, Scarlet Sentinel, Washington Strawberry, Yates, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Lord Lambourne. Just starting to blossom are Yellow Newtown Pippin, Stellar, Yellow Transparent, Virginia Winesap, White Winter Pearmain, Court Pendu Plat, Cinnamon Spice, Maiden Blush, Rubinette, Sundowner, and Carolina Red June. I will say that most are not happy here and show classic signs of inadequate chill. The blossoms and leaves come in onesies-twosies instead of a full flush, dragging out for a month (makes for great pollination however). Many trees have golf-ball sized apples and are still blossoming. Some have bare wood towards the trunk unless the branches are pulled almost horizontal. We have some local 6000Â mountain orchards that allow me to compare their performance with a cold climate. YouÂd think that because of our warm winter they would be earlier to blossom, but itÂs just the opposite. They are at least a full month later than the same variety up in the mountains because of the lack of chill. Yellow Transparent should be fruiting at the end of this month, but itÂs just now blossoming. We have no disease or pests, but I can see how this long blossom period would drive folks nuts trying to time sprays. The low-chill apples will crop and then continue to blossom all the way through Thanksgiving, often setting a smaller second crop. But rest assured we eventually do get a full crop and it really doesnÂt matter how late they blossom, the later the better. Our season is never-ending and they can hang on the tree until February if they want. Two Fujis are our oldest trees and they have adapted well to our climate, blossoming a month earlier each year and doing so in a full flush. Because they ripen in our winter with 80-degree days and 39-degree nights, the quality and color is outstanding, as it is with other late varieties like Gold Rush and Pink Lady. I feel bewildered and a bit cheated that weÂve been told all these years that apples wonÂt grow in a warm climate, and think of all the people that have missed out on some wonderful apples because of this myth. The myth is universal also, with even our own University of California system saying that apples need so much cold to break dormancy and zone 8 is marginal for growing them. If this is true, then why do Granny Smith and Pink Lady never lose their leaves here in zone 10 over winter, and yet still blossom and set a full crop of fruit with the new leaves pushing out the old? Yes, the habits are different and the color may not be quite up to snuff, but the result is a full crop of high-quality apples that blow the doors off anything in the supermarket, including all the popular varieties like Pink Lady, Gala, Fuji, Braeburn, Delicious, Granny Smith, and Golden Delicious (Pink Lady even does well out in the low desert of Palm Springs and Las Vegas, graveyards to other apple varieties). So when it comes to apples, ignore the chilling hours and plant what you want. DonÂt be so quick to attribute lack of fruit to inadequate chilling hours, as there may be other reasons like lack of pollination, multi-grafts (a bad idea here), late-bearing varieties (Fuji takes 5 years to really fruit), bi-annualism, or too much fertilizer. Hi Marc- Welcome to the Fruit and Orchard forum. I like the idea of Asian Pears enough that Im planting one myself this year. If you do decide to go with apples, I really would recommend going with a "Disease Resistant" variety. If you want to make fruit growing one of your main hobbies, then yes, you can grow well known varieties, but be prepared that you will spend a lot of time spraying serious fungicides which are very difficult for the homeowner to obtain legally. I think I may preach this a bit louder than the others, but, in my mind, DR apples are 50% easier to grow. IÂm just south of you in RI, and around here, youÂll need to deal with Apple Scab and Cedar Apple Rust as well as quite a few other diseases. If you just go to your local nursery, and pick up a Red Delicious, or some other well known apple, you will need to spray it almost constantly (with homeowner-available fungicides) around here to avoid the those diseases. For me, in RI, that meant 7-10 days... and even that, only solved the scab, while the rust reeked havoc with my trees. HereÂs what I recommended to a friend of mine last year: He wanted 2 apple trees. I recommended Liberty and a Williams Pride which are both disease resistant. I have both, though the WP has not fruited yet. When I went to a local orchard last week, I tried 9 varieties of apples. The Liberty tasted really great to me. For both my father and I, it was in 1st place until the end of the tour when we tried an Empire. I took me 4 apples (2 Liberty, 2 Empire) to determine that I liked the Empire just slightly more, but only slightly. But, the big thing here is Liberty is DR and Empire isnÂt. So, IÂm still glad I have the Liberty. Liberty is still at harvest time now for another 2 daysÂ (possible a little longer since youÂre north of me). If you act fast, you might be able to try one at your local orchard. I still havenÂt tried my Williams Pride, but it has a couple of nice qualities: 1.) ItÂs extremely DR (I havenÂt sprayed my tree at allÂ zero, zilch, nada, and it probably looks better than any of my other trees). 2.) It is a very early variety (ripening in mid July around here I believe), so you will spread your harvest out which I like to do. 3.) Some might argue that early apples in general donÂt taste as good, but if you search this forum, youÂll find many accounts of it tasting better than many of the fall apples. Then thereÂs the issue of insects. You will need to deal with Plum Curculio and Apple Maggot fly. Unfortunately, DR canÂt really help with that. But, with just two trees, you can "bag" your apples. Do a search on this forum about bagging your apples, and youÂll find a lot of great info. If you were to decided to go with just 1 apple tree, make sure you have something to pollinate it nearby, or you wonÂt get any fruit. Either a neighbor with another apple tree, or a crab apple nearby. Finally, If your looking for a source, Google "Adams County Nursery" and "Cummins Nursery". The tree will come as "bare root", and it will probably take you 3 years or so to get your first couple apples. Or, if you decide that you would like a mature espaliered Liberty, then there is a place down here in RI that has one. Good luck! -Glenn

Habanero de Arbol isn't a C.Chinense. I think it's an Annuum that has a lot of C.Baccatum characteristics (cold tolorant and taste along with pod shape). Mine was about 10+ ft. tall before I trimmed it several years ago. Now it is roof height in a 15 gal. pot. i changed the soil for the first time last year,it's pushing 10 yrs. old. these were just sprouted this year. It fruits in early spring,mid winter and fall. My tree has pods almost year round. Once you trim it it stays that height.Don't trim a small one or you won't get a tree. Mine only get about 4-6ft. high the first year. They seem to prefere to be slightly root bound.Mine didn't do well after re potting until it re filled the container with it's roots the next season. It can handle 30 degree night. for about 3 days before it shows stress. It doesn't get that cold here for more than a couple days a year here. It only lkes ferts. about 2 times a year maybe 3.It is a mountain variety used to growing in poor soil-so I was told. The seeds I got were originaly from S.America(I forget where) aned grown out by a nursery for sale. The story I was told goes as follows... A guy went home to wherever and braught back the seeds to grow for lunch at work. He worked at a nursery. The plant got 10+ft. tall and customers commented on it so they grew it for sale. The first year they couldn't grow enough of them - people liked their looks. The second year they couldn't give them away. Everyone who baught one either found out how easily they overwintered or didn't like how big they get and how hot the pods are. Either way everyone who wanted one had one from the first year. This year is the first year in about 4 yrs. I see them for sale at nurseries. The pods are hot and have a slight C.Baccatum taste. In Mexico etc. a lot of the hotter peppers are refered to as habanero wether they are actually C.Chinense or not.They use it as a generic name for a lot of the hotter unknown peppers. I've spread a lot of these seeds around over the last 8-10yrs. MI do have seeds for trade or SASBE. E Mail me.

Can someone tell me about mulberry trees(non fruiting)

Fruitless (male) mulberries were very popular in our neighborhood when developed during the late 1960s. A few are still doing well, but most declined in the 25 to 35 year age range. Can be a very nice fast growing shade tree, but here are a few comments after living with a couple of them in a small yard for over a decade: Three feet from the PL could be tight if there is a fence or other hard-scaping - Trunk will eventually reach ~3 ft in diameter plus another foot or so for root lift around the base. Our PO planted one only about 7 ft from the house slab. While way too close for its eventually large trunk, the roots didn't cause any foundation or drain problems. "Fruitless" does not mean "flowerless" - The male flowers are numerous, large, and produce MUCH pollen. Not bad over a lawn, but can make a mess over vehicles, pools, gutters, or other spaces where the piles of flower debris and/or yellow dust would be a problem. As mentioned earlier, seems your neighbor's could still be an immature female tree, then would also deal with the fruits. They grow fast and want to branch low and often. Makes them wonderful climbing trees, but can require more trimming (large + fast growth) on urban lots than most others. Removing new whips a couple times a year while still small enough to be clipped with a pole pruner was much better than fixing the frequent crossed and sagging-towards-the-ground branches later with a saw. They want to produce very dense shade. More shade tolerant turfs, like St. Augustine, can be kept alive to within a few feet of the trunk with the right exposure and pruning. May not be much of a change factor if the tree is to your north. But if it's on your south that close to the PL, it could eventually change what can grow in something like a 18 foot arc of your yard. Not necessarily a bad thing. Assuming you were diplomatic in asking to kill you neighbor's tree, seems unreasonable for them to get angry over your concerns about such an eventually large and rampant grower that close to your PL. Maybe there's still a window to suggest/offer moving it or replacing with an alternative better for both of you in that location.

Nourse Farms has a great reputation for fruiting plants. They don't carry tr*ees to my knowledge.

You can buy an apple tree with two different species grafted on, but I highly recommend espalier method if your short on space...you could have a bunch more trees

Thanks for all of the information, folks. I'm not sure that we're any closer to our decision, but you've given us lots of food for thought.

A couple of things: We're definitely looking at freestanding trees, not espalier, interesting though that might be. Also, we already can and otherwise preserve things, but apples still keep longer, which would give a bit of flexibility in the canning schedule.

I called Stark Bros. and quizzed them on various things. I now have relative sizes, spacings, and years-to-first-fruit for various types of trees.

plympton_ma, I'd really like to know why it is that you say that the apples were a pain. What happened? What do I need to know?

Tangential to this, how close do trees need to be to pollinate? I'm thinking about getting an apple tree. There are a few apple trees on a lot around the corner from my house.

That's close enough for pollination as long as the trees around the corner bloom at the same time as your tree does. Any crabapples that might be around will also pollinate your tree again provided that they bloom at the same time.
