id not sure if native?

Sorry..no pic. Was walking along a wooded stream's edge and came upon most unusual plant. Thorny stem, True blue small clusters of berries cupped in a perfectly round leaf. Other leaves were small and perfectlt triangular. Any ideas what it could be?

Sounds like green briar also called cat briar. They are a vine covered with needle like thorns. The roots can be used as a substitute for pectin, soI've read.

wow! thanks everyone! #2 is definitely not hosta, because my "darling" deer would be all over them! ;-). I will watch to see of they flower, hadn't ever heard of Canadian Lilly of the Valley... Will also watch the other leaves for flowers.....Asters are native to the area. Gardenweb to the rescue, again! ;-). Thank you!
