Hello everybody, Just a word or two to say that my Chocolate flower has finally bloomed. Its actually a desert plant but it likes full sun and grows on poor soil. I started it from seed last spring and brought it indoors last winter. I am going to leave it outside hoping it will survive the Winter here in SE Wisconsin.

My, what a sweet little wildflower. I see there is a lot of difference found on line, as to just how hardy it is.

Big Dipper Farms says zone 5.
Dick's Garden says zone 5b.

J. L. HUDSON, SEEDSMAN does not give a zone, but says the flowers are used as seasoning.

I'm wondering if you have maybe harvested some seed from this little jewel...hint, hint.

It's a fun plant with good fragrance (the chocolate scent seems best during the day in direct sun). On the negative side - it's not very ornamental (as is the case with "chocolate cosmos") and is short-lived.

I think these are beautiful plants for your wild flower garden. I've planted them with my Butterfly flowers. I want more of them! I'm going to collect seed from them! Notice the red stripes on the reverse of each petal. In some lighing, the red shows through to the front. The scent of the blooms lasts as long as the red in the middle of each bloom. Once the red is gone so is the smell, but the smell...That is amazing. I can't believe the scent is so strong and smells so much like chocolate. This is my favorite plant this year. I'm very impressed with it and wished I had discovered it earlier!
