Deadly Nightshade

Can anyone suggest ways of ridding a garden of this pest? I'm sure this is not the technical name but it should due.

First, pick of all the books and seeds, so at least it won't get worse.
Some would say cut it off at course whenever you see it and it will give up. I try to uproot it, and while it usually comes back , it is not for a while.
Some would resort to chemicals.

This some has tried Brush be gone and it barely fazes it,looks a bit ill for a couple of days and bounces right back.

Ok. I'm a lil late to the game. I bought my atropa belladonna seeds from Horizon Herbs. The owner said to cold treat them by putting them in a pill container with cold water, in the fridge for two weeks, changing the water daily. Then to put them in seeding soil to germinate..... Ive done the cold treatment, finished it today and have placed my seeds in a 3 inch terracotta pot with seeding soil beneath it and lightly covering the seeds. The soil is moist but not wet and sitting in a window on the sunny side of the house. It's about 40F during the day and 19F at night. Is there anything else I should do with it to ensure it's survival? I have tried many times in the past to get it to grow but never have I tried the cold treatment before.. I bought limestone powder for it once it's somewhat growing. I've got monkshood seeds to work on next but they won't be done with their cold treatment until April. I have gotten that plant to bloom though. but i really would love to have the nightshade.

I had used what is called Solanum Nigrum, in India - especially the leaves and ripe berries - with lot of success - to treat sores in mouth. Here in the US, though I located them with good fruits right in my backyard, I found them to be quite bitter. However, here are some info about the plant itself. See the note about the ripe berries. Thyme growing beside deadly nightshade. Can I still use it?

Your thyme won't pick up any toxins from the nightshade. The only problem would be if you accidently included some of the toxic plant leaves or stems with your thyme.

Bindweed & Deadly Nightshade in Veggie Garden

If there are any nightshades left, pull 'em. And bindweed is just as nasty but in a different way. Cardboard would work quite well on the nightshade seeds, but the bindweed may be working its way over to another part of the garden. Nevertheless, the cardboard's worth doing. Moisten it and layer shredded leaves, grass clippings and peat moss or other organic materials on top. 12 sheets of newpaper can replace the board. Just make sure that the cardboard or paper is solidly covered so that moisture doesn't wick away. Then let the worms do their work through the winter and you'll end up with a wonderful planting area. I saw on a tv show that in Britain, they put containers of vinegar next to bindweed plants and let the foliage sit in it probably as long as possible. Supposedly the vinegar goes into the roots to eventually kill the plant. Might be worth trying. Maureen

Woody Nightshade/Bittersweet or Solanum dulcamara is the nightshade that is naturalized here in the Northeast US. Dig it up roots and all before it makes berries. It has probably already set berries so even if you dig it up, you might have some seedlings next year to get rid of. I don't do herbicides so I can't suggest anything for you there.

If there are berries, grow some in a pot. This way you will know what the seedlings look like and you can pull them as you see them...this is what I do with plants that are not too familiar to me. The birds love nightshade fruit and even if you pull the plants before they set seed you'll still have plenty of seedlings (Like I have with buckthorn).

Even mature nightshade plants pull easily with their long wiry roots. If you must use chemical control (and I'm not endorsing that), cut the plant off near ground level and apply round-up to the fresh cut, goes straight to the root and kills it.

Ever so true about the birds! And a good idea about learning your "enemies" as seedlings. I have let plants grow that I didn't know from seedlings just to find out what they turn into.

If you are in the NY State area, Cornell University (in Ithaca) has a large collection of gardens including a crop and weed garden. Might be something for you to check out if you are in the area.
