Gentiana ID please

I grew these from seed received in a trade. The trader said they were Gentiana andrewsii, but going by the descriptions in the Peterson Wildflower Guide, I think they may be Gentiana clausa. The seed originated in NY State. Any thoughts?

Here is a link to a good pic of these plants. Mine are VERY tall, some almost 3' (can be gently bent over for shipping). They have many blooms ready to open, and many have seed pods drying on them as well. I have sent some to my mom that after a cross country trip still held their blooms. Well...I appreciate all your responses, and I'm going to assume it's a common garter snake...for my OWN peace of mind...LOL I believe he was so grumpy because of the flash from the camera...it probably scared the bejeezus out of'm. Plus...I'm wondering if it isn't the onset of hibernation time. I mean, afterall, he WAS way down under some pretty hard, clay covered by about 4" of mulch. He was probably sleeping...or getting his last full meal of night crawlers when I uncovered him. *I'm in SE PA, not Florida at the moment. He's gone now and I don't know where...hehehe...but I covered the hole back up with the mulch. BTW: When I let Picture it! automatically tweak the color and brightness levels, the colors of the snake were changed a bit. Here are two pics showing actual color...

"But no one has told me what the difference is between Prunus laurocerasus and Prunus caroliniana. No such clarification was posted. My original question was about identification of a tree. Is there some reason to believe that I have one, rather than the other? " It was properly identified by botanical name by Embothrium. Prior to that, just one of many common names was used for ID however that common name is often applied to both species. Prunus caroliniana is a native species that includes Texas as part of its natural range. It would be very unusual for Prunus laurocerasus to pop up spontaneously in your area but entirely natural for P. caroliniana to do so. It is also more tree-like in habit than Prunus laurocerasus, which is most often grown as a large shrub with no discernible trunk and the leaves present somewhat differently (smooth margins for one and slight serration for the other). As to the negative attributes you list, other than the propensity for P. laurocerasus being invasive in specific areas, they are just not serious enough to worry about.

Gentiana clausa -- andrewsii doesn't have tucked-in tips of the petals like that. Your plants really are lovely!

I must say, the Peterson Guide is really great at pointing out differences between similar species. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Thanks again.

When I was a kid I spent a lot of time in the woods and fields across from my parents house. One of my most vivid memories is walking through the fields in the fall and seeing Gentiana andrewsii, fall asters and goldenrod all over the place. Now all those fields and woods are gone. Just lots and lots of houses with green lawns. Very sad.

G. andrewsii & G. clausa are so close they are almost interchangeable. They are both native to NY state. They are both commonly called closed gentian.
The key for my state's flora says:
Corolla lobes shorter than the plaits = G. andrewsii
Corolla lobes longer than the plaits = G. clausa
If you like gentian the real show starts next month when Fringed Gentian blooms. The cobalt blue flowers open up and are exquisite but the plant dies after flowering.

Thanks. Here's what Peterson's says about andrewsii: "The deep blue petals stay closed, joined by and slightly exceeded by a fringed whitish membrane. A very similar species G. clausa, has the petal tips free of the joining membrane."

I did dissect one of the flowers and could not find the above mentioned membrane.
