1 Rubus. Some kind of Blackberry/Rasberry/Dewberry 2 and 3 Something in the Mustard family - the common one this time of year is Barbarea vulgaris, Wintercress. Could easily be that. 4 Veratrum viride, False Hellebore 5 Another mustard. Could be the same as the others. Need more details to ID them. 6 Japanese Knotweed. Run! 7 Pachysandra. A commonly planted groundcover. 8 Evening Primrose, probably a weed. Oenothera sp 9 Not sure of that one. Some kind of Buttercup, maybe. Ranunculus sp. 10 A Viburnum. Linden Viburnum, maybe? Or Doublefile? Not that many have the big and little flowers together.

Hi @Marie Tulin: I'm flattered by your Bogartian compliment. I am most delighted that "...there's a lot more viburnums in Lexington MA..." I am fairly certain that @kevin_5 and I both posted Viburnum dentatum bloom sequences back in the day (overlapping with the life of this thread; 2003 - 2006) listing the selections that we had growing at the time. Viburnum dentatum & Friends, it was titled. IIRC, it also listed more partnering recommendations, especially among the many hybrids that are available. Someone more capable than me might be able to hunt that down. If it turns up here on the front page, I'd be happy to eventually update it with all the many clones that I've had growing here at the Valley. As far as other species, I don't think I know of other species of Viburnum with enough different clones selected to actually create a sequence - except for maybe Viburnum dilatatum. Since it is considered invasive in a good part of eastern North America where it can be grown, I don't often contribute commentary on that one. Of the ones I used to grow, there was enough spread to have very early done blooming selections setting fruit ('Catskill') when the last selection was starting to bloom ('Michael Dodge' for me).

Gamekeeper, the New Hampshire state nursery sells seedlings for several species of Viburnum - V. recognitum (northern arrowwood), V. lentago and the V. trilobum is available in their wetlands package. They take orders through the winter and ship only in the Spring, and it's first come, first served. You might be close enough to pick them up! Very inexpensive, $1 or less apiece. Is this in moist shade? At a higher elevation? It's difficult to get a sense of the plant's habit -- it looks like it rambles or declines on surrounding vegetation? My first thought was a viburnum (maybe V. lantanoides [formerly V. alnifolium])-- a cyme of fruit of many colors is typical for the genus. But those tri-compound leaves, if I'm seeing it correctly in the photo, and the fact that it blooms in August are not the habit of any native viburnums I'm familiar with. I'm interested to know what it is. Soeur
