Thanks the morden man, they are pretty when they are in bloom.....just planted Blossomtime and Awakening rose bands next to them, hopefully in 3 years I will see some re-blooms out of the same spots. Also I will try deadheading after their first bloom this year.....I might buy another New Dawn and give it a try if I can find a grafted one at any local nursery...... I see you're in Ontario, there is a Niagara Parks Botanical Garden, it has over 2400 roses, I love there! Thanks again

Hi eager, I think I wrote to you on the rose forum. I don't have New Dawn, but everyone raves about it. Don't worry about clay, my roses seem to love it. And rose tone is very good too. I used to use the Bayer systematic, but I have too many roses now. I just use alfalfa and rose tone and I do spray with just the Bayer fungicide to control black spot. I don't worry about bugs too much. The worse are Japanese beetles and they haven't been that bad the past couple of years. I just pick them off and drown them in water.

My opinion changes with the seasons. What is currently blooming is my favorite. These are what is currently blooming now in early October in our shady gardens: Twist & Shout Hydrangea with lime added to stay pink in my acid soils. Impatiens, annual: any pink especially the hot pinks Japanese anemone: light pink flowers, though floppy 'Autumn Joy' sedums Corydalis lutea, yellow blooms Darlow's Enigma, hybrid musk rose white fragrant blooms Hardy fuchsia purple with red I do miss the blooms of summer though with the sweet william, crocosmia, shasta daisy, lilies, heuchera, phlox, and hosta adding their loveliness in the mix. We have cool summer weather & these plants bloomed in my shady backyard garden surrounded by tall conifers & deciduous trees. Remember they won't bloom as well in shade, but will bloom. Spring blooms are also lovely... lungwort blue-eyed Mary (better behaved, but similar bloom to forget me not) lamiums columbine vinca minor & major Primrose 'Wanda' yellow eyed purple sea of white sweet woodruff hardy geranium phaem in later spring that keeps the bumblebees happy

FD is new this year and I have her on her own root. No scent that I can detect yet, but truly, I have not bent these old bones down to where she is currently blooming to check and see. Plus, due to our heat and sun, fragrance is a fleeting thing here. The breeder, Burling stated she would get to be about 7 feet. I think she will exceed that. She has just taken off in our surface of the sun heat and she is in full, direct sunlight all day. Burling who bred this rose is about 60 miles south of me and is about 5--10 degrees cooler in the summertime than I am. I am about 5--10 degrees cooler than Las Vegas in the summer, generally, but for most of the summer, we have about the same temps and it doesn't cool off here at night very much, just like where you live. She is healthy and vigorous and I was a bit concerned that her flowers were starting to look a little ugly, (she is still very much a baby). Then today, I saw a Blue Jay attack the flower and eat it! No wonder they are looking a bit scrappy! I have never seen a bird eat flowers before. With this drought, they must be really hungry. Burling breeds her roses for health first and then beauty. I love FD. She is beautiful!
