This is a very difficult question. Different botanists have described different numbers of varieties within this species, using different characteristics. No varieties at all are described in one of the most recent references, the Flora of North America, although this work does describe the problem. Quoting from the Flora of North America page linked below: Achillea millefolium is morphologically variable and has been treated as either a single species with varieties or as multiple distinct species. At least 58 names have been used for North American specimens. Some early workers (e.g., J. Clausen et al. 1948) thought the native North American plants were taxonomically distinguishable from introduced, Old World plants. Other workers (e.g., R. J. Tyrl 1975) have treated A. millefolium as a cosmopolitan, Northern Hemisphere polyploid complex of native and introduced plants that have hybridized, forming diploid, tetraploid, pentaploid, hexaploid, septaploid, and octoploid plants and/or populations constituting a single, variable species. An older work, Gleason and Cronquist's "Manual of Vascular Plants" makes a relatively simple distinction between native and introduced Achillea: "Typical European A. millefolium, a hexaploid with flat leaves, the relatively broad ultimate segments all in nearly the same plane, is rarely introduced in our range. Our native forms are mostly tetraploid, with narrower leaf-segments disposed in various planes so that the leaf is airily 3-dimensional. These represent the transcontinental ssp. lanulosa (Nutt.) Piper, consisting of several varieties as yet not well understood." You could try contacting the company that prepares the wildflower mix and asking about the origin of their seed. If you have some space I'd consider Jerusalem Artichoke. This is a very confusingly named native sunflower that I have heard was grown by native americans, and actually spread around the eastern half of the continent by humans. The roots are the edible part of the plant. one great thing about this plant is that it is in spectacular bloom with hundreds of 3 inch sunflowers in september when school is returning to session. it is a large plant, at least 6 feet tall and spreading to form a large clump, but durable and easy to grow. I have no idea why it is called jerusalem artichoke - not from jerusalem, not anything like an artichoke. The yellow plant next to the aster is a goldenrod, probably solidago canadensis. This is a great plant for attracting butterflies in the fall and is very easy to grow, durable (kids won't easily kill it), and spread to for a clump. The mystery plant with orange flowers is jewelweed - impatiens capensis. Jewelweed is considered a treatment for poison ivy - you break the stems and spread the juice on the poison ivy rash. jewelweed is an annual plant that should return from seed in the spring - look for seedlings in april and may. It does best in a moist area.

In eastern Mass. at least, the most common plant that meets the 'daisy' archetype (Jungian perhaps? It seems like kids know how to draw them without actually seeing one) -- fairly large flower, white petals, yellow center (I apologize to the botanists cringing at my inaccurate use of these terms for composites) -- is the oxeye daisy, a non-native. The easiest way to identify it is the depression in the center of the yellow (which is lacking from the flowers in the picture from Utah). Asters and fleabanes, while they also may have white petals and yellow centers, are generally too small to fit my concept of a daisy. My field guide's description of wild chamomile is consistent with the flowers and foliage in the photo. (Oxeye daisy leaves are much wider and lobed/serrated.) Other daisy-like flowers in my guide (albeit only an eastern U.S guide) are: sneezeweed yarrow, mayweed, feverfew, and scentless chamomile, all non-natives to this area. The two most common Allocasurinas in Victoria, or at least around Melbourne, are: Allocasurina vertcillata Allocasurina littoralis The former has very long drooping needles and is aptly named Drooping Sheoak. The latter has shorter needles that generally stick straight up. Black Sheoak. The sheoak in the photo looks like it might be littoralis. The wattle tree will be either Acacia dealbata / Silver Wattle or Acacia mearnsii / Black Wattle. The leaves consist of a main stem with smaller stems branching off, with each smaller stem being lined with leaflets. Look at the top surface of the main stem and you should see raised circular glands. If they are evenly spaced it is Acacia dealbata. If they are scattered haphazardly along the stem then it is Acacia mearnsii. All of the Melbournian Eucalypts have white or creamy flowers and the one in the photo appears to have yellow flowers. So it is not a local if you are in the Melbourne region. It in fact looks like a Western Australian species, whose name escapes me, that is commonly planted in parks and gardens around Melbourne.
