I'm growing Scutellaria integrifolia in my garden for the first time. I've seen a weird thing about the flowers -- they are all tiny flowers that never open; I haven't seen one normal flower. I assume the tiny flowers are cleistogamous (i.e., self-pollinating). I am reasonably sure that the plants really are S. integrifolia, because the leaves and seed capsules are a perfect match for S. integrifolia.

I just assumed that the weird flowers resulted from my plants being unhappy with the conditions in my garden, until... last week I saw the weird flowers in the wild. In North Carolina, several hundred miles from my garden, an entire group of Scutellaria integrifolia had only the tiny, closed flowers.

Has anyone else seen this weirdness in hyssop skullcap or other Scutellarias, either in gardens or in wild plants?
