I have Germination!

Just had to share a 'Sqwwwee' moment...of germination.
I started a mixed flat of coreopsis lanceolata and Engelmannia peristenia about a week ago....and was hoping that the summer temps wouldn't be too high for germination.

As of this morning, I have at least ten set of little cotyledons of each...sprouting started yesterday.

I started them with intentions of transplanting them into my fencerow in September (when hopefully rains will recommence) for naturalization.

I hope to wintersow some salvia azura (assuming my plants do produce seeds this fall for me) and maybe liatris pycnostachys (also waiting on almost certain seed set) to add a bit more color.

Anyone got anything exciting germinating? Any suggestions for something else I should get planted (I have a number of things now)?

I'm still waiting for germination on the sand sage but the ring muhly is coming along fine. I plan to set them in the ground in late August which will give them plenty of time to put down some more roots. Its a good time to sow for fall planting in Oklahoma.

Update. I just checked, one sand sage has germinated. One plant is all I want, I hope I don't kill it. Its such a mild summer its good for starting seed, I wouldn't have sowed in summer in 2011 or 2012 under the heat dome during the prolonged drought.

Artichokes are picky, so you might read up on them. Artichokes like a Mediterranean climate Â frost free with foggy summers. There are few areas in the world with this climate, & that why Italy produces the most, & in the US Â CA. The areas where they are grown the most in the world commercially (Puglia & Sicilia Italy, Castroville CA) have similar latitudes and opposite longitudes. They like to be close to the sea where the soil has a high salt content, & some sources recommend a seaweed fertilizer. If I was only allowed to grow one herb for cooking, I'd be torn between basil and summer savory. You always hear savory called "the bean herb" (snap & dried) and it does go nicely with them. For a super-quick salad/side veggie, drain & rinse a can of white beans or chickpeas. Toss with minced or dried summer savory, olive oil, 2-3 tablespoons of minced onion and a couple cloves of minced garlic. Crazy-easy and so, so good. I toss on quite a bit when I make hummus, too, instead of parsley. Savory's also fantastic in split pea soup and great with tuna. I use it alot with pasta, cream soups, and in pretty much anything with cheese or eggs. One of my favorite breakfasts is creamed eggs on toast: Slice or chop hard-cooked eggs. Make a medium white sauce and season with minced summer savory, a bit of dry mustard, salt & pepper. Add eggs and serve over toast. To me, it has a fresh, sweet, green taste with a faint peppery bite. Actually, I don't think there's anything I wouldn't put it in. Once you develop a taste for it, you've gotta have it! Last year I grew some Red Wonder bell peppers from a commercial pack I bought in 1999, and several cukes (tiny picklers) from 2000.

The candytuft I am sowing is Snowflake, an evergreen variety. The aster is a dwarf variety called Milady. I started winter sowing December 24th last year. According to my notes I was planting out bachelor buttons, larkspur and both annual and perennial poppies by the end of February. I did lose alyssum sown in January and Nasturtiums planted in mid March to freezes. The majority of my 30 jugs are things I know can germinate any time but still handle some freezes that I am sure are headed our way. Snaps, dianthus, poppies, and delphiniums to list a few. Using some common sense one can winter sow in my area starting now through March. Of course there is always that testing those waters that makes life fun. I held back seeds from the few things I was not sure how they would handle possible early germination with dips below 32 degrees later. The asters and candytuft will be those living life on the edge experiments ;)~

Well, it's not exciting per se BUT...am wondering....I inadvertently germinated some liatris seeds.....they germinated 2 days ago...I'm guessing they won't be of a good size to plant out by Fall so I was considering growing them indoors over Fall and Winter and putting them out in Spring...can they survive next to a window or do I need plant lights, special set up etc etc to insure their survival?? (I live in No VA mtns....nothing like the TX growing season I'm sure :)

I would suggest they have a better chance outdoors unless you have a greenhouse.

Sorry I am late to this thread. I went into an old box of seed and some emptying out. did a summer planting of 5 year old Aristolochia erecta (swan flower) , scutelleria drumundi, fresh aescalus pavia var flavenscens hybrid collected from the Perdenales river, 3 year old seed of Arroyo sweetwood and we have Blast off. I have ONE ring Muhley. I will try some more in a more drained soil. There is more Out there. Oh yea, Rayless gaillardia from the Ranger.
