How is the soil worked up in the spring? I would be afraid of the bushes getting plowed under. And if you don't have access to them in winter, how will you shovel snow on them? Can you keep wire around them over winter to keep the rabbits and deer from chewing them off at the ground? Some community plots require you to remove all stakes and wire in the fall to facilitate plowing. And don't forget that you would need to add peat and sulfur, etc., to keep the soil acid, plus they need a lot of water. In community garden plots, not all of those needs are providable. Can you keep them in a large pot and transport the pot out to the garden on a small trailer in the spring, then bring them back home in the fall? Personally, I would hesitate planting them in the ground in a community plot, even if I had the same spot the next year. Northwoodswis

FWIW. Garden huckleberry is in the genus Solanum. Looks like a larger version of the Black Nightshade.Flowering and growth pattern very similar. Huckleberry in the south refers to a blueberry relative. Tastes like a blue berry but has lots of tiny seeds so that they have a gritty texture. There are plants called huckle berry in both the genus Vaccinium and Gaylussacia. The common name has a broad use and may be a different plant in different regions. For those interested, the south is native to another huckleberry look alike Sparkleberry/Farkelberry Vaccinium arboreum . http://www.augustaga.gov/1634/Sparkleberry Wonderberry/Sunberry is also a Solanum but a different species. Well, to pollinate, you first need to put on some cellophane wings and plastic antennae, then you need to make a buzzing sound to get the lychee flowers in the mood...LOL! Seriously though, I just use a small (10/0 size) paintbrush to collect the pollen off of the males, then apply it to the receptive females...piece of cake.
