Wild Potato Vine

Someone offered me some seeds today because they were really impressed with this plant.

The only difference I can see between this vine and the morning glory is a different shaped leaf, is that it? Is it invasive?

If you are talking about Apios americana, it has a lovely bloom, a purple/pink/white cluster. It appeared on the bank of my pond several years ago. However, this year since we finally had lots of spring rain, it "crawled" over a small island and hid the few plants that are there. We did have a flood that covered that area for two weeks this spring, so maybe that allowed the vine to cross those few feet of water. This winter I will burn that area and hope to get the vine under control. So, you will need to make sure that it doesn't get away from you as mine did, but only after several years of good behavior.

Do you have a picture of the seeds? You might be interested in knowing that you live in the county of TN which has colonies of the Apios priceana. This is an endangered species. If you are lucky enough to have seeds, count yourself lucky! I am currently researching this species at WKU in Kentucky. I would love to see any pictures you might have of the seeds or the vine you have growing! I will be able to tell you better if it is A. priceana or not if I have a pic to look at.

I agree that the vine posted is Ipomoea pandurata...everthing about the plant spells Ipomoea pandurata including the relatively rare ridged sepals... The colored area in the throat may appear to get larger as the flower closes and the outer limb edges fold inward thus making the throat area appear larger in relation to the remaining smaller white limb area... additionally there is some degree of reddish pigment that extends outward from the colored throat that is not initially visible to the human eye but as the degradational enzyme levels increase and turn white area to reddish, the reddish area may 'expand' a bit... Ipomoea pandurata can be self-infertile and require another Ipomoea pandurata plant (preferably from a different geographic strain) to induce good seed set... Hope that helps... regards, Ron

The air potato beetle (Lilioceris cheni) will eat the leaves and the vine will die. The little beetles work wonders. There is a variety of Dioscorea that looks very similar that is edible and tastes really good. It is called winged yam (Dioscorea alata). I have an article at my site about identification and preparation of the edible Winged Yam. I had the air potato beetles show up on their own last year and they ate all of the D. bulbifera, but did not touch the D. alata ... thankfully ... because I will be digging tubers in the winter. I got on the waiting list this year for beetles, but have not been sent any yet. I searched my property for the beetles yesterday and found about half a dozen ... with several mating so my air potato problem will be under control pretty soon. I gave my neighbor a mating pair to put on his air potatoes and he was thrilled. Letting the beetles do the work is so much easier than pulling and digging the stuff in 100 degree heat.

Wow, that's a lot of plants! I don't have a list of what I'm growing in my little gardens -- sometimes it takes me a couple of weeks in the spring to realize that that weird looking weed in the corner is something I've had for years. I just assume that more plants than not will grow in this area! One of the more unusual plants I grow is agapanthus. Not a particularly hardy variety, this was simply a florists' plant my mother gave me four years ago. But it's come up reliably every year for the past three seasons in Central Ohio. It's planted against a south-facing brick wall with excellent drainage, and apparently doesn't realize it's not in zone 8+ anymore! One of my mother's more spectacular plants is a 15 year old calamondin orange that arrived as a little "get-well" houseplant. It spends the winter on the unheated glassed in back porch in Cincinnati, and now stands over 6' tall in the pot, and is nearly 4' around. It always has flowers and fruit on it, and we've picked 200 ripe fruits at one time.

Depends on what it is. Dioscorea oppositifolia or Chinese Yam (aka-Cinnamon Vine or Air Potato) is an invasive species If it is Dioscorea quaternata or Dioscorea villosa (Wild Yam) or Ipomeoa pandurata (Wild Potato Vine) then they are native species. The native vines have heart shape leave. The Chinese Yams are longer and thiner toward the bottom and new leaves often have red around the edges.
