Monarchs: Liatris special

Hey-it looks like the migration is starting up here in the North.
Seeing lts of Monarchs this year after only seeing one last year.
They just have to have their Liatris liguistylis.

Beautiful shot. Beautiful liatris. What kind of liatris is that . It looks more puffy than the L aspera. My lust-o-meter is sparking. I grow L. mucronata, or I should say , it grows around here but so do a few other kinds also. They are still in tight wands , no where nears blooming and the butterflies are no where nears Texas.

Thanks for the nice reply. This is L ligulistylis, a late bloomer up here and in prime bloom for the migration. The Monarchs will swarm over this even tho my garden has all the other notorious butterfly types. This is a 'MUST HAVE' for Monarchs

If I didn't remove the dried stalks from mine each fall, I'd have them coming up as thick as grass out there. I end up with a couple of grocery sacks stuffed full of dried stalks with hundreds of seeds that I scatter elsewhere or share with people who have an acreage. Mine are natives I got from Kansas, the whole roadside was solid pink for miles with them. Each spring I always have some volunteers from seeds that fell off when I cut them back.

My newly eclosing Monarchs aren't really staying around to lay eggs; they seem to be nectaring up for the trip South. They will undoubtedly lay on the way "home". You'll probably see an ELF from farther up North, but your female sounds like she was already on the road when you captured her and possibly already mated.

I've purchased from both and got them mixed up in the beginning too! I got seeds from Prairie nursery a few years ago, the seeds had excellent germination and very generous quantities. I can't speak for plants, but that is a good price for small pots. How do you know it's on sale though? I may consider purchasing some, since I had half a dozen plants that I started from seed several years ago, but have experienced terrible die back in the plants this year. This is probably because I transplanted them late in the Spring and they didn't respond well to that. They would be easy to start from seed again, but IME it takes at least 2 years to get a blooming plant.

Liatris of ANY species is the butterfly magnet...I had a field of pycnostachys in Oklahoma...wow!

I'm winter sowing this species this season. I am glad I found this post. I have not seen a Monarch on the premises in 3-years. Sighted one at school.
