Why Newcomb's?

I've been using Peterson's guides for wildflowers and trees and shrubs (by G. Petrides) to identify natives in their natural habitats -- I probably picked this series because I've been using the Peterson bird guide for many years. I've mostly been pleased with the guides' usefulness, although I have to admit that I still can't tell the goldenrods apart.

But I keep seeing references to Newcomb's. Is it better than Peterson's in substantive ways or is it just a matter of preference? I'd be interested in your opinions.
