Sunflower Question

IÂm not certain is this is the correct forum for posting questions on sunflowersÂ..I *think* they are a native species. Hopefully you can help.

I planted a sunflower (not sure what kind  I just grabbed the packet of seeds) back in May from seed. Now, itÂs about 4 feet tall. The space itÂs planted in is small  only about 2 feet by 3 feet but itÂs not competing with any other plants. It gets the afternoon direct sun and is right up against a brick wall. IÂm noticing a few things:

1. The main steam doesnÂt seem a thick as I would have thought it would be. Granted, itÂs thick in terms of comparing it against my other flowers, but IÂve had to use a tomatoes cage to support it. Is this normal?

2. Did I plant it too late and that is why itÂs not that tall?

3. There is one flower on it  not very large and it use to be round and open. Now, itÂs "shrunk" and the sides tend to want to close together. IÂd almost want to say the head is ready to be removed, but I thought sunflowers stayed on longer. What should I do?

4. Something is eating the leaves. There are all these missing portions of the leaves and I canÂt figure out what it is. IÂve taken a look in both the morning, afternoon and evening and donÂt see anything. Your thoughts?

5. Do sunflowers need any special fertilizer or watering? IÂm a newbie at gardening for the most part and certainly with sunflowers, but IÂd like to grow them again.

6. Is it too late to start a new flower from seed? How late will they bloom until

Thanks all Â

Cheers,

Darby
