looking for some tree seeds

Im looking to get a hold of some northern source - ilex opaca or american holly - no hybrids or cultivars - just the plain old opaca from Mass or northern PA preferred - bald cypress northern - carya illinoises?? northern pecan. sourwood - Sassafras - dutchmans breeches?? cucumber tree magnolia acuminata - eastern wahoo - not european spindle tree. This is a long list but im getting it out early while the harvest is in full swing . if you see anything on my list let me know. I will pay for shipping or postage if only SASE

We have Sassafras all over. Let me know where to send the seeds. Or you can come harvest yourself if White Plains is not too far for you.
FYI, the sassafras wood is very brittle. I would not plant sassafras trees near any structures or cars, etc. as they can snap off large pieces at any time.

I believe your talking about white plains NY probably too far for me to come gather seeds..lol. Im in southern ontario Canada just north of lake Erie about 15 miles. It sounds like you have a very rich spot with that many sassafras, we have them just here and there. Im wondering what other goodies you have in such a good spot. I cant send you an email or reply to the one that was sent to me but if you send me your email addy we can set something up. Thanks for responding so quickly. I will be out collecting soon so let me know what your interested in and Ill try to get hold of some

When I lived in Phoenix I would just go to the park and pick some up of germination experiments. Gardenweb has a Gardening in Arizona where you might locate someone to do the same for you. My experience was that you get better results from fresh seed, late summer or fall, and you get better results scratching them with a nail file. But the seeds do germinate rather well when a year or more old and just soaked or planted.

Woodnative, that's a nice spot you've put together. My Chionanthus are still a few weeks away from flowering, but you've reminded me what I have to look forward to. In these parts, Carpinus caroliniana is an understory tree with a strong preference for moist soils. They can handle more sun, but moist soil is a consistent. They will also look much different in full sun than in their natural shady conditions. Personally, I think they look better when grown in shade. The canopy is more open and with horizontal branching. I've got two growing here, both of which I've sited at the woodland edge. To get a real appreciation for this tree you need to venture into a moist woodland.

I am interested in any natives that can grow in my area. My guess is that most things that can survive Ontario can survive in NY. I have not had a lot of luck with seed so don't knock yourself out on my account but I would gladly take any native seeds you have to offer.

We have a lot of invasives (but many less than a few years ago) but also a lot of natives. Our volunteer natives include: Red Osier dogwood, blood root, golden rod, jewel weed, mayapple, various ferns, elderberry (I think), joe pye weed, bidens discoidia (sp?), virginia creeper, inkberry (I think), cherry trees and trout lilly and, of course, poison ivy. I am forgetting a bunch and have yet to identify a bunch. We have lots of blackberries but I am not sure of their provenance.

We have also introduced some natives including: black eyed susans, trilliums, coreopsis, witch hazel, blueberry, assorted viburnums, white pines, duck potato, trumpet vine (beginning to wonder if we should have done that one), jacobs ladder, and some other things I am forgetting. We also have many junipers that were part of a landscaping plan a long time ago but I have no idea as to their provenance.

I see you are looking for Spotted Jewelweed seeds... do you want me to put you down for some? They fit your location criteria since I'll be wild-collecting here in Woodstock (it's me Barb). I'm already collecting for one chap so I might as well collect for you too if you are still looking for some. let me know.

Oh, also, where you have listed "Native" on your trades list, does that mean "NATIVE TO CANADA"? Or "NATIVE TO ONTARIO"? Or "NATIVE TO YOUR/OUR REGION"? The reason I ask is that you have Saskatoon Berry listed as Native and I originally wanted one but then when I researched it, it doesn't appear to be native to anywhere in Ontario but more to the westerly provinces. Can you clarify please and thanks. :o)

But I am looking for witchhazel and sassafrass seeds....Bob64 , I hope you dont mind but I see you have witchhazel and sassafrass where you are.Do you have some seeds you would be willing to share? Let me know what you might be looking for .....maybe I have some to share back .

Well as you know barb, I'm a native tree and shrub fanatic but Im also interested in some of the hardy southern native species from a collection point of view . Saskatoon berry ( I like the serviceberry's) is all gone from last year and nothing came up this spring With regard to the jewelweed - where I work they are taking down a little wood lot to expand their parking area I've already asked my boss if I can claim all the native plants and shrubs (lots of jewelweed) there and got the green light - just don't no when I'm going to find time to do all this.lol.Signet I have 2 witch hazel plants in my collection but will be out collecting seeds soon. I also found a great gingko tree loaded with fruit so let me know if you want some.

Jeff, I have 2 Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) but they don't bear flowers until late winter/early spring. What kind of Witch Hazel has flowers that bloom now? And how do you harvest seeds? I see those yellow flowery things but have never seen actual "seeds"...I guess I just don't know what I'm looking for.
