No, the vine won't hurt the tree. Virginia Creeper clings to the outside of the bark with holdfasts and doesn't interfere with the tree inside. The vine may climb quite high into the tree and portions of the tree canopy might get covered in vine, but Virginia Creeper rarely completely covers a tree or even gets close. I was going to write "never" completely covers a tree, but undoubtedly someone somewhere has seen a Virginia Creeper completely cover a tree. I bet yours won't come anywhere close. The Virginia Creeper will get berries when it gets larger and the birds will eagerly eat them, plus the Virginia Creeper turns bright red in the fall.

If your wild cherry is a Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) then it will be a long-lived tree and the Virginia Creeper can get quite large. Many other wild cherries like Bird Cherry and Fire Cherry tend to be short-lived, and the Virginia Creeper might not have a chance to grow really large. Virginia Creeper can live a long time, I think, provided that the tree stands up long enough.

I LOVE virginia creeper. It makes a beautiful backdrop to my garden when it hides the fence every summer. Also love the beautiful indigo berries and scarlet leaves in the fall. Does any know/remember when it leafs out in, say, zone 5? I have pictures of it densely covering the fence last memorial day but cannot remember when it starts. Today, May 3, in my garden there are just a few green buds on the vines. But I do remember how incredibly fast it grows.

I grows up my garage and all along the wire to the pole in the back of my yard. It also tries to cover the pussy willow next to it. I have to cut it so it won't creep along the ground and engulf my garden beds and block the entry way to my backyard. But yes, I still love it.

I love Virginia Creeper! Every autumn you can almost tell the date without a calendar, just going by the brilliant scarlet color of the Virginia Creeper. I'll chop euonymus, honeysuckle and grape vines off my trees, but never Virginia Creeper. It's an asset.
