ID yellow star-shaped Kennesaw Mtn Flower

Every time we go hiking up Kennesaw Mtn, we see these plant growing along the side of the trail. They're less than one foot tall, have tiny yellow star shaped flowers. The plant has no leaves; not sure the right term, but it reminds me of a pencil cactus, just much smaller. I love to have these for our yard, but I have to figure out what it is first. Any info appreciated.

Yeah - mini or non-mini - that's still up in the air. I have this gut feeling I'm going to end up having to call it Yellow Mini (?) forever, as the only few photos I've seen on the internet where the blooms look alike are labeled Yellow Mini. I looked up Rise N Shine, Y2K and Sequoia Gold, and alas - blooms don't look like any of them. The closest named rose I think I've seen is Lemon Drop - the new blooms look very very similar, but the aged blooms do not. It's aged blooms look exactly as they do in the 2nd picture - you never see the stamens before the pedals blow. And the pedals stay on a really really really lone time (up to a month). I do know this search has given me the opportunity to look at lots of gorgeous minis that I wouldn't otherwise have seen...

Mallowmallow yes that is it. You made my day. I went outside to take a look to see if the flower matched my google image search, and there was another bloom. It was a puple and lavender stripped flower. The plant grew about 6 inches taller than it was on Sunday. Thanks you very much. Judy

Hypericum gentianoides (Pineweed or Orangegrass), a member of the St.Johnswort Family.

Thanks, that's definitely it. Does anyone know if they can be purchased somewhere? If I dig one up in the National Park, they may throw me in jail.

Definitely a no-no, to collect plants, cuttings or seed from public lands, without a permit and I don't think that would be an easy thing to obtain from the FWS!
The plant is an annual, so there are probably no commercial sources for plants.
Best bet, is trying to locate a seed source. Maybe someone in the GNPS could help. It's possible that they might encounter some colonies of the plant during rescues, although I have been on dozens of rescues during many years and have never found one.
Another source might be the Seed Exchange Forum here on GW.
They produce a large number of small black seed that should be maturing now.
