Serviceberry Rainbow

I've bought serviceberries from a locally owned and operated nursery, particular fruiting varieties via mail-order, and in bulk from the local conservation department. I never had any problems or pests bother with them. Serviceberries are very hardy and fairly pest-free. I would suspect the problem to be the quality of stock and care found in the big-box stores and/or the stress of being planting in the middle of summer. I do not suspect a dogwood would have fared much better in such a situation.

I had five serviceberry trees planted last autumn in my new garden. The trees have been watered regularly but had quite a few yellow leaves. I think the abnormally high heat plus the recent planting has attributed to it.

Hopefully you are keeping your tree watered! Newly planted trees should not be allowed to dry out and should receive regular watering for a year or more.

I have noticed local river birch trees have also shed some leaves during the very hot and long dry spell.

I just planted a couple of serviceberries in early summer. They were purchased from a native plant nursery at a reasonable price, but are not named cultivars. One is a Saskatoon Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) and the other is a common or Downy Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea). There are a number of other varieties too. The variety that is most often planted for human consumption is the Saskatoon Serviceberry. It generally grows as a large shrub rather than a tree, and has a number of named cultivars. Among the named cultivars, Regent is one of the smaller ones, and thus easier to net for protection from birds. Saint Lawrence Nursery in Potsdam carries a number of named cultivars with good descriptions. Among larger varieties, the Allegheny Serviceberry is said to be juicier and sweeter than the Downy Serviceberry according to one internet source, though I can't recall which one. The ones I planted were pot grown seedlings, about 15 inches tall. The Saskatoon Serviceberry already had berries on the seedling when I purchased it. They ripened within a couple of weeks after I planted it, so I got an early taste. We have deer where I am, and they like to munch on serviceberry twigs, so if you live where deer will frequent your yard, you'll need to provide protection. especially to seedlings. I use Irish Spring deodorant soap, which seems to work pretty well. I hung a half a bar by the Saskatoon Serviceberry, and the deer haven't touched it. I didn't get the soap hung by the Downy Serviceberry, and within a couple days it had been nibbled. Fortunately damage was minor, and I quickly got a bar of soap out by it. The deer have left it alone since then.. This is a very cost effective solution too. Half a bar of soap will last a couple years where I live, though we average 35-40 inches of rain annually

Alberta- The last time we had rain here was about 6 weeks ago when that mini tornado hit Massapeaqua. Thankfully not here, just rain. Since then other parts of Long Island not far from us have had rain, sometimes lots of rain. But not here. It is weird how one place gets so much and another closeby gets nothing. I was out after the rain stopped. Sprayed ALL the daylilies and some of my roses with the Neptunes Liquid Seawered Fertilizer. I wanted to do it now that the daylilies get hydrated. Plus it might rain some more which would just wash it in so thats all good. It started raining again while I was spraying. I do this with a no mix hose end sprayer so I drag the hose around the yard. I did it this way when I sprayed for thrips and I always spray my roses like this. Doing the fertilizer is actually easier as I don't have to wear socks and long pants and rubber gloves and be careful while I am spraying. Anyway the neightbors that saw me must have thought I was nuts but I knew when I started I would finished ever if it rained on my. The rain was only light rain anyway. Seems to have stopped again.

You can expand your search by using the correct cultivar name 'Glenform' - Rainbow Pillar is just the trademarked or market name. Various wholesale growers in the PNW are offering this selection - Blue Heron, Surface Nursery, etc. - so should be available through local retail outlets. Retail nurseries start bring in their fresh stock for the season in this area beginning next month, with the greatest availability typically in mid to late March (which is also an ideal planting time) so you may be just a tad early in your expectations.

Pretty much everything has experienced heat and drought stress where I am. Some plants shed leaves, some sacrifice the outer leaf margins, some let their fruits shrivel. Plants react to survive.

That being said, I tend to avoid buying new plants or doing any transplanting once the weather gets hot. Roots grow best in cool temperatures, and roots need time to get established. I have found that I lose a lot more plants when I plant in hot weather, so I just don't do it anymore.

Ditto the above.
Also, plants from big box stores tend to be heavily root bound. Give it water and mulch it and it will probably survive.
