Goosefoot Leaves Red Underneath?

Every reference I have seen to goosefoot - specifically lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) - refers to the underside of the leaves being "whitish".

I have many plants in my garden that appear to be lambsquarters. The leaf shape is distinct, isn't it? Lobed except near the tip? I have field guides and have checked some Web sources and the leaf shape looks like a match.

However, when the leaf is turned over to expose the underside, "whitish" is not the first word that comes to mind. "Red" is. Maybe a whitish haze over the red, but most definitely, these leaves are green on top and red underneath.

It is early in the season (July 4, 2008). Perhaps this is a feature that fades with maturity? Am I looking at Lambsquarters or something else?

I have seen a LOT of Lambsquarters in my yard (I finally started eating them and they are way better than spinach!) and yes, I frequently see a dark red on leaves, ussually toward the stem, and the stems a deep maroon. As I recall, they are usually the smaller plants, so you are probably right about the maturity.

...it's NOT native, just in case you posted here because you thought it was. A plant that makes itself at home wherever it goes!

Have you checked the tree for scale insects or aphids? The sticky substance may be honeydew (a secretion from these insects). Seeing ants is another indication that this might be your problem as ants "farm" these insects to gather the honeydew. If honeydew is left on the leaves, you might start seeing a black sooty substance, known as "Sooty Mildew" on the leaves. This is the byproduct of decaying honeydew. I am lucky enough to be able to PIG my plants (plant in the ground). FWIW, I have found that those PIG plants multiply better. I started with 4 plants - here they are blooming. The one on the far left is nearing 4 feet tall. You can see pups around the bottom. As it aged and the flowers faded, more babies formed on the stalk. You can see babies below, too. BTW - bees love these flowers. And now I have tons of plants. With every plant that blooms I get more and more pups. This is part of them on my landscape island. They are all the red plants in this picture. You can certainly pot them up or trade with friends. I love this plant! You have a beauty and yours will perform well for you, too.
