lycopus, thank you. I'm not quite sure this is it. It looks very, very much like what I have, but the leaves are just a bit off. All the photos I see have leaves which are rather flat. The leaves on mine are more curled up at the edges, even with a slight ruffle to some of them. (Of course, that could be because it's in a vase of water on my table, and not outside in the sun in the garden! I'll take a look at the ones still in the garden next time I'm there.) Other than that, the images look very similar. I will leaves a few in the garden and see if they go to berry. That may help me identify it more firmly. It is indeed a nice looking plant. Perhaps I will try to transplant some out of the beds and along the woodland edge. Thank you! Dee

It's in a neglected bed of Lily of the Valley that has coneflowers, milkweed, goldenrod and probably other native plants that have snuck in or been planted very haphazardly. I plan to keep spraying the LOV with Round Up until it stops returning, and encourage all the natives to increase. I don't know if I should try to make it look organized or not. Time wise, I vote not. I'll keep adding shade tolerant natives and see what survives. Thanks for helping. Maybe I need to leave it another year and see what it does. Martha

Do you not want mulch? It would keep the weeds out! and it covers the dirt, its not green though. You would do well with daylilies. Some people have told me that they don't do well together, but I plant mine together and they do fine. They multiply also, and would provide some color after your iris are done blooming. The roots will also prevent errosion. Just a thought. I love daylilies they come in so many pretty colors. Check out some mail order companies online if you want colors other than the plain yellow stella's that you always find at local nurserys or Walmart. Marietta gardens has huge selection. Gilbert H. Wild has them for cheap if your doing mass plantings. You can also check out the Lily Auction. Hope this helps!
