lycopus, thank you. I'm not quite sure this is it. It looks very, very much like what I have, but the leaves are just a bit off. All the photos I see have leaves which are rather flat. The leaves on mine are more curled up at the edges, even with a slight ruffle to some of them. (Of course, that could be because it's in a vase of water on my table, and not outside in the sun in the garden! I'll take a look at the ones still in the garden next time I'm there.) Other than that, the images look very similar. I will leaves a few in the garden and see if they go to berry. That may help me identify it more firmly. It is indeed a nice looking plant. Perhaps I will try to transplant some out of the beds and along the woodland edge. Thank you! Dee

Check out Commelina. There are a few native perennial species and a widely naturalized Asian annual species found in the US.

Thanks very much for all your replies! The mint 'bush' was huge, so I can see it taking over a garden. Looks like this poor garden has been neglected for years and things just got out of control. I'll plant the mint in a pot as suggested, find a shady corner for the lily of the valley plants and skip the goldenrod and sweetpea. Thanks again... I may be posting more pictures in the future because I can't tell a plant from a weed :) Kristine

tat was just small patch. there were a few that I noticed had leaves 3 maybe 4 inchs wide. none had more than 2 leaves but this time of year its expected. the texture was almost cardboard like. There were seed pods but I forgot to take a pic. reminded me alot of a hosta seed bract but the pods themselves came to a point and were very round.
