You can't use a safe insecticide until you know what you're using it against.

Typically we plant native plants to attract insects, like butterflies and bumble bees. And most native plants can tolerate a considerable amount of insect damage without being fatal to the plant.

I have monarch caterpillars that strip every leaf of my asclepias incanarta down to nothing left but stalks, and the plants still return the following year. I don't get any blooms though. But I will sacrifice blooms for the life of the butterflies.

If you believe the eating is going to harm the plant you can spritz the plants with a simple soapy water solution. Soap is a general insecticide. Now realize this will be harmful to beneficial insects as well as harmful ones.

I do think lacyvail's advice of identifying what is eating the leaves is good advice. It might be a rabbit rather than an insect?

I have gone out at night with a flashlight to see just what has eaten holes in my plants. At times I've found slugs, sowbugs, or beetles. There are brown beetles that are active at night. I've known them as June bugs.

Well if it were a vegtable garden I would also plant extra for the insects but all I keep is plants for birds ,bees and butterflies and when something destroys a whole planting they have to go.My garden center recommended eight and it seemed to do the trick. If they comeback it will be used again.

The problem, gamekeeper, is that IF your plants are for the birds, bees and butterflies, when you use permethrin (the active ingredient of Eight) on your plants - you are now killing birds, bees and butterflies... so you want to attract them and then kill them?
