echinacea petals falling off

I have a few echi. plants-1 a couple years old, and a couple planted earlier this year (from plants, not seeds). The base of the plants seem to look healthy, but the petals keep falling off? We've had a few heavy downpours, is it too much water thats causing this?

Any ideas would help!

Petals don't stay on forever. Flowers are transitory things. I think that briefness only adds to their beauty.

Echinacea hold their blooms longer than many flowers, but what kind of time frame are we talking here for your flowers lasting?

If you cut those "finished" flowers off, your plants might make make more flowers.

Hey guys, thanks :) Yeah, I kind of thought it would be transplant shock. Just moved so I purchased them from a nursery, that's why I don't really know the latin name or anything... I do know they're annuals though. I moved them in the same dirt I bought them in into bigger pots with more dirt, they weren't very rooty but the dirt is different than what they're used to. This is a picture of the flower three days ago when it opened (if you guys are curious as to what kind of poppy it is, I also have a smaller hot pink flower now on the same plant), later that afternoon it lost two petals and looked sad already. Oh well, guess I'll have to try from scratch ;)

My Sunset died soon after purchase, never even saw it bloom. Twilight, Sundown, & Harvest Moon which were bought at the same time from the same place and planted in the same bed all did fine, blooming some the first season and wintering over and now blooming this year. When I replied to the very long "Comments on the performance of echinaceas" thread I forgot all about it, until this posting. Sure enough it's on my list and marked DIED within a month. Certainly sounds like a weak plant that doesn't belong in the marketplace.

Goldfinches also LOVE the seeds of the dried Echinacea cones. The brown seedheads look kind of ugly but I leave them up because I enjoy watching the Goldfinches picking at seeds in the garden. Even though they eat most of them, I still get plenty of seedlings sprouting. Last year I cut off some dried Coneflower stems and tied them to branches under a large Yew in my bird feeding area. The Goldfinches picked at the seeds through the winter. The stems could be tied to a trellis or bird feeder or woven through a fench or lattice and if you have Goldfinches, they will find them. I think I might put some Cones someplace right outside a window this year. Here are a couple Goldfinches picking over some leftover seeds last April.

Help Lupine petals falling off

Cut some lupine tight for a florist and within a day the petals started dropping off. Does anyone know what might of happened? Thanks, Kathleen
