Why not post some pictures? pictures is worth 1000 words. Also if its insufficient light, did you try growing veggies that dont take or need too much sun? see if they thrive. When I lived in townhome I had a small patio that used to get may be 2 hours of sun daily. I never got anything to grow there, eggplants would simply get fungus. Only one time I got huge crop out of one cherry tomato and one pepper plant, thats about it. Soil that does not get much sunliht and heat could be prone to more diseases. how about hard pruning some of the trees.

Wow, first I was thinking they sounded like ladybug juveniles but they don't eat plants. Try dusting on the sevin and be sure to get the undersides of the leaves. A light dusting, more frequently is healthier for the plant than a heavy coat. The objective is to get the plant eater to eat the coated leaf AND DIE. Try finding an ID on google/what's that bug. What's that bug is a great site someone here recommended when I was searching assasin/wheel bugs.

Yup, I have it as Coleus coeruleus. Got it with that name from Gunther Dotsauer from Germany - a specialist. Coincidence explains a great deal of what you are seeing. That and the fact that given the lousy weather many have experienced this year there are lots of "horrible" tomatoes growing. You are far from being alone with tomato problems this year if that is any comfort to you. But those problems are weather related, not soil location related for the most part. So what specifically is wrong with your plants. Like Dan, I too have grown tomatoes in the same fields for more than 40 years with no problems. Regular crop rotation is more of a commercial grower thing and something most home gardeners just can't do. Volunteers sometimes appear more robust simply because of their mutated genetics (assuming they were hybrids) and because they often develop later then those we transplant. But despite their appearance they often don't produce or don't produce edible fruit so it is a trade off. Dave
