In NE Iowa we have birdsfoot trefoil growing along the ditches quite abundanly. Since it is called bitdsfoot t. I assu;me that there are other kinds of refoil. Are they as common and what makes a plant a trefoil? Thanks for any comments as I have been curious for a long time.

I'm in St. Paul, MN, and we have birdfoot trefoil growing throughout the state; not just in ditches, but open fields in the city and along the freeway. Aren't they beautiful? I love the yellow and orange combination. I've tried transplanting them, but they just won't take root in my yard.

Trefoils are members of the lotus family--from what I've heard, the ancient Greeks called many plants "lotus." The birdfoot trefoil (lotus corniculatus) was imported from Europe and spread across the U.S.

Did you know the international symbol for Girl Scouts is the trefoil? The three leaves represent the thre parts of their "promise."

floral, I did not mean to imply that longer grass would keep Birds Foot Trefoil would n grow there but that cutting turf grass short is not good for that grass and will allow more "weeds" to grow. To grow a good thick turf grass means the grass needs to have as much blade exposed to the sun as possible so the grass can manufacture the nutrients needed to grow more grass that comes in thicker. kimmq is kimmsr
