Jack in the pulpit

Hello everybody, I bought 2 Jack in the pulpit plants back in the spring and planted them on the edge of the woods near my viburnums and the solomon's seal I mentioned in a different post. The SS are doing fine, the Mayapple and cinnamon fern are ok. The Jack in the Pulpit got dry and withered out quickly. I couldn't save them. is it possible that they will come back?

They should come back next spring. In many places, JIP's are ephemeral. My JIP's are pretty much gone for the summer.

Though my Mom has a cool, moist, shady spot where here JIP's stay all summer long. They grow huge and look like tropical rain forest plants. Its a microclimate great for JIP's, but its not typical growing conditions.

Jacks will go dormant in dry conditions or if it gets too hot. They will be back next spring.

I don't know about Trilliums, but jacks CAN skip a year, though it is usual. The corms would still be firm though. You received these in May? I wonder if rather than sending you dormant plants ready to sprout in 2016 that the vendor took 2016 plants, removed the foliage and shipped. If that is the case they will not sprout until 2017 anyway. I love our native jack and have it here and there in my suburban garden, where it slowly spreads and sometimes appears in surprising places as seed gets spread around. Conditions here are "average". It certainly seems adaptable and can take some drying in midsummer where it generally dies down anyway. I have a couple Trilliums but they have not done as well for me.......persisted and bloomed for many years but not really increased in size much.

Some people use a soft paintbrush, but I think a q-tip should work. There is no harm in trying.I would google the plant blossoms and then google a pint anatomical drawing and make a guess. I live in a place where jack in the pulleys fear to tread so I will keep my mouth shut. I would look for stammers and pastels , however you spell it.

The "coating" needs to be removed if you want next year germination. However, if you are not in a hurry, you can just drop them in the soil, and Mother Nature will take care of that. If you clean them, be sure to wear gloves, as the coating will cause an itching reaction in most people. They do not like to stay in pots very long, so plant out at least by the next fall after germination.

I'm surprised that the Jacks went dormant and the Mayapples are doing fine. My Mayapples are starting to look a little sad and tend to go dormant if it gets a little dry whereas my Jacks persist into fall.

Yes, my jacks are going too but even though the foliage dies, the seed heads will continue to ripen even though they are laying on the ground. Don't worry, they will be back. Here in southern ontario they are a spring ephemeral along with Blue Cohosh, all the trilliums, the dog tooth violets and the May Apples. May Apple is one of the last to go though, along with bloodroot. By August my woodland garden is quite sad looking with all these either gone or turning brown, yellow or whatever.
