Staghorn Sumac??

Hello.....

I have FINALLY been able to identify a tree / shrub (not sure which) that I see all over this area as a Staghorn Sumac. This I wouldn't have know unless I started looking into native gardening

ANYWAY, my question is this...from my understanding the female tree is the one that puts out those red spikey flower things?? I also have them with yellow / golden spikey flower things, is this the male form or is it a hybrid of some sort??

In the flowering stage, they should all be the same color. The sumac flowers are a yellow/green but the bright red berries that form on the females change the appearance.

You're correct in that the ones that don't turn red are the male trees, though likely of the same variety.

Wayne, thanks for the follow up. I have S.Sumac ALL OVER the place down here and have wondered what they were for the longest time, its nice to finally know! The red berries looked great with the bare branches during the winter but I was surprised by the yellow / golden flower spikes as I was expecting them to be red

I have to be honest with YOU. Staghorn Sumac trees are seen in my area as "weed trees", in other words, they are trees that are seen as being like "weeds". They had been growing wild along the driveway near mine and my neighbors house. AND, somehow Staghorn Sumac seems to have been given more respect from my neighbor, than it should have been given. Even though the Staghorn Sumac is a kinda "Trash tree" of a tree that is REALLY seen as a UNLOVED tree. I really DO welcome that anybody who see's the "Staghorn Sumac" as being a SOURCE of HORRIBLE news about just how much looking into the problems between the actual ":bitching about what is wrong", could ever be able to show the actual conflict about the problems could ever be clear enough to solve the mystery.
