Need wild berry ID

HI, i am recently in the Ithaca region and i have found small groundcover that has small berries. i at first thought they were at first alpine strawberries, but they are so small and they don't resemble stawberries. I was wondering if some one could help me.

Not much of a description of the foliage and habit, but two possibilities are Mitchella repens, Gaultheria procumbens.
Google images to see if it fits.

Another possibility is Indian strawberry (Duchesnea indica). In my area, it's a very common lawn weed. It is not native -- it comes from India.

I never saw the flowers even though I make it a point of hiking through this area regularly. Due to the chewed off tops, it is quite possible if I had visited a few days or a week later I may not have seen these plants either. bboy - not sure if you are referring to the plant's odd name or if you think they were eaten by horses, but on that note, while I was looking up info about "horse gentain" it was noted that nobody really knows why it was given this name :-)

It very well could be. The habit shown in the pic just reminded me of the Boysenberries that we used to pick on a friends farm as a kid in zone 5.

I see that now, as I read, thanks. The leaves reminded me so much of a crown of thorns house plant I used to have, but I know that house plant does not get berries.
