Lycopodium digitatum, often called Running Ground Pine or Fan Moss. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to transplant and maintain in cultivation.

I think razorback is right - this is a tough plant to transplant. I would try taking as large a section of ground as you can and moving it intact. I am talking about cutting a sod of this plant and moving a section a foot thick, or as close to a foot as you can get. The thicker the better. Take along a shallow box - the type of box a case of canned beer comes in - with one end or side opened flat. Once you have made vertical cuts around a piece of sod, slide your shovel under the sod to separate it from the soil beneath, then slide the whole thing into the box. Carefully slide it out when you get home. I have tried many times to move club mosses but always failed. Moving some with soil intact might work.

I have had success by finding more isolated clumps off to the side from the main group. You are more likely to get a clump of the roots that way. Otherwise, you might just end up digging up the runners.

I have clumps that I transplanted 3 years ago and they are still thriving. So it is possible, but do take the time to identify the root area and get as much as possible.

This large colony is very close to my home so I'll be able to try various methods of transplanting/etc. I'm encouraged with the news that Esh has been successful.

I have had the most luck transplanting this in April in NC. I did not take lots of the soil but did put in area with pine trees. It is being destroyed by the acres every day, so why not try to transplant, at least you are giving it a chance.
