Well, I looked up live sphagnum moss, and I definitely don't have that. I tried looking up Anomodon, and can't say for certain I have that, either. All the pics that I saw looked more branching than what I have, but it might be too early to say? All I know is that this moss looks like it stays low and creeps, looking more like a carpet rather than stemming out. Also, the spore caps on this one are tiny and orange-red, and the pics I saw of some of the Anomodons are more like seeds sticking out on longer thin stems. I found some more growing on Hydroton! That was neat. All the others are growing on sphag or some other more organic medium. I tried looking up some sites that might help me ID this stuff, but didn't find anything that really helped me, a moss novice. Oh well. Let it grow as it will. The one thing I did seem to find out was that iron or sulfur based solutions kill moss, so I guess I should be careful if I want to keep the moss. I seem to recall stuff to get rid of slugs/snails is iron based?

Here is a list of the Selaginella species of Georgia: There are two sections: 1. Tetragonostachys 2. Stachygynandrum the first are moss like and the second are like the common Selaginella kraussiana that is sold in many garden centers under a variety of names. 1. tetragonostachys: acanthonota, arenicola, rupestris, tortipila 2. stachygynandrum: apoda, ludoviciana There are several members of stachgynandrum that are of foreign origin that have been naturalized in the state. I have excluded them from the above list. For more info check out my site (link below) On growing Lycopodium: there is some belief that these club mosses have a commensual relationship with certain soil fungi in order to survive. I have no clue but would tend to think that not enough is really known to make such a statement. More information is really needed on the soil characteristics that these plants grow in, including temperatures and the seasonal variations of the characterisitics. I tend to think that for the creeping species that die back is normal on the older stems as the colony advances outward. Very nice image of this Lycopodium. It would be a difficult subject for a terrarium. However, it could be done if your terrarium was a cold terrarium with lows falling into the 30s and the highs probably into the mid 60s (all Fahrenheit). The other barrier to effective cultivation would be having enough of the rhizomes (roots) of the plant to help it survive. It may occur in your state. If you know anyone who owns forested land that has populations of this club moss on it then I would recommend that you get permission to pull a plug of a patch of the plant. Be sure to note the environmental situation and find out about the amount of light, rainfall, seasonal temperature changes as well as rainfall cycles. I would keep the terrarium outside in shade on the north side where it would be the coolest. Be careful with the humidity level as fungus could develop and overtake the plant. I have had limited success with different species of this genus. Mostly due to the simple fact that I have not had the time needed to really study and monitor the plants as should be done for this part of California. My own problems center around on keeping the plants cool enough! Otherwise I think that they would do well here. One important consideration is that they do not seem to enjoy having their roots disturbed either but I have not really done much in the way of experimenting with them on this issue. One is Orchid Gardens, 2232 139th Ave. N.W., Andover, Minnesota 55304 Mr. Phillips sells a 3 species collection of L. annotinum, L. clavatum, and L. obscurum (the easiest grower of the three) for only $6 USD. You will have to write him for a copy of a catalog. Send along a dollar for it. There is one other source of a native Lycopodium species, I think it is Lycopdiella inundata. It can be purchased over the net. Check the link below. Of all the species of Lycopodium and related genera (most of whom had been included in Lycopodium in the past) the Lycopodiellas are perhaps the easiest to grow. It is a bog type plant and just needs quality water, distilled or r/o, and an acidic mix, such as a blend of river sand and peat moss. It can handle some flooding and very mucky conditions. To expand upon your interest there is a gentleman in Florida who sells tropical species of Lycopodium. Rare Flora-click here I think this is it. Availabiltiy is variable and on a first come basis. And if you find Lycopodium intersting you might want to explore the world of our native Tetragonostachys section of Selaginella. These are the moss like species and occur mostly in the western half of the country though around 3 species are prevalent in the eastern half, Selaginella rupestris being the most commonly encountered one. I am interested in the reply that you get. Nomenclature changes happen so frequently now but it is often hard to find the reasoning behind them without a thorough search of the literature. My current institution is quite lacking with regard to access to recent publications. Would be nice to have access to a translation of this article: Yatsentyuk S.P., Valiejo-Roman K.M, Samigullin T.H, Wilkström N., Troitsky A.V. 2001. Evolution of Lycopodiaceae Inferred from Spacer Sequencing of Chloroplast rRNA Genes. Russian Journal of Genetics, Volume 37, Number 9. A phylogenetic tree of the family would really be interesting and I suspect the authors present one in this paper.
